A dynamic two-part dance and cultural unit for students aged 9-13 exploring Caribbean Soca music, Carnival movement aesthetics, and collaborative group choreography. Students build rhythmic literacy, physical isolation skills, and ensemble performance confidence.
Teach and drill each pillar using "I Do, We Do, You Do" methodology. Hand out colorful bandanas or flags for Pillar 3:
1. The Chip
Weight glides side-to-side in 2-step shuffle. Knees bent 30°, feet stay connected to the floor. Practice traveling in serpentines.
2. Waistline Flow
Initiate circles from abdominal core. Emphasize musicality: accenting the heavy "one" beat of the bass drum.
3. Jump & Wave
High energy elevation! Flag waves in continuous figure-8 overhead while feet bounce. Land with soft shock-absorbing knees.
4
Rhythm Lab & "Carnival Fete" Freeze Game
12 Minutes
Students use the entire room. When music plays mid-tempo, they chip and wave. When teacher shouts "Mash Up!", tempo surges into power jumps. When music stops or cowbell strikes "Iron Freeze!", dancers freeze in dramatic low or high Carnival shapes.
Tip: Encourage students to cheer each other on when partners hold creative, grounded balances!
5
Cool-Down & Reflection Circle
8 Minutes
Slow breathing with arm sweeps. Gentle hamstring and calf stretches. Group reflection: "How did dancing together change our collective classroom energy?" Preview Lesson 2 choreography project.
Teacher Look-Fors & Verbal Cues
• Watch for: Stiff upright posture. Cue: "Sink your weight into the floor like your feet are rooted in sand."
• Watch for: Tense raised shoulders. Cue: "Let your collarbone smile, let your arms breathe."
• Watch for: Rushing ahead of tempo. Cue: "Wait for the heavy bass drop before you explode!"
Adaptations & Extensions
• Seated / Low-Impact: Waistline isolations, arm patterns, and flag waving can be performed seated in a chair.
• Challenge Extension: Add directional changes (quarter turns on counts 4 and 8) while maintaining the chip.
• Sensory Support: Provide designated low-volume dance zone for students sensitive to sound levels.

Set B: Creative Challenges
Challenge 1 Ensemble Leadership
Call & Response Leader
In Caribbean Carnival, the bandleader cues the crowd, and the crowd echoes the movement.
Leader Role: Perform a 4-count movement prompt (e.g., 2 chips right, 2 shoulder shivers).
Partner / Crew: Echo the exact same 4-count movement with matching energy on counts 5–8.
Switch: Rotate who leads every 16 counts.
Success Check:
Can the responders match the leader’s energy without missing a single beat?
Challenge 2 Physical Coordination
Polyrhythm Sync
Splitting the body between two independent rhythmic speeds.
The Feet (Slow Beat): March steady on counts 1, 2, 3, 4 (half time).
The Hands (Double Time): Clap or snap on 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and.
Level 2 Challenge: Swap it! Feet move fast in a chip while hands wave slowly overhead.
Success Check:
Maintain your steady foot tempo even when your arms speed up or slow down!
Challenge 3 Statue & Stillness
Carnival Freeze Frame
Showcase distinct sculptural shapes and levels as a cohesive trio or pair.
Rule 1: Dance full out for 8 counts of upbeat Soca movement.
Rule 2: On the freeze cue, strike a 3-level picture: Dancer A Low, Dancer B Medium, Dancer C High.
Rule 3: Hold like a museum statue for 5 full seconds without a flinch!
Success Check:
Every group member is frozen at a completely different vertical level!
Challenge 4 Sequence Stacking
The 16-Count Combo
Stringing all 3 pillars into one seamless combination loop ready for choreography.
Counts 5–8: 2 complete waistline rolls in place with chest lifted.
Counts 9–16: 8 airborne power jumps waving flags overhead in a circle!
Success Check:
Can you repeat the 16 counts twice continuously without stopping?

Performance Spirit
Stage Presence & Carnival Joy
Performance Vibe
The 3 Elements of Presence
1. Eye Focus & Chin Up
Look out beyond the audience, not down at your sneakers!
2. Infectious Energy
Carnival is about shared celebration. Smile and radiate fun!
3. Crew Connection
Acknowledge your teammates with quick glances and shared smiles.
Mistake Recovery Protocol
If you miss a step or turn the wrong way on stage:
✨ Never freeze or look guilty!
💃 Keep chipping to the bassline until the next 8-count.
🚩 Wave your flag with confidence: The crowd won't know it was a mistake!
Confidence turns accidents into style!
In Trinidad Carnival, joy is power. When you commit 100%, the entire room feels it!
Mas Presentation
Showcase & Audience Rules
Supportive Cypher
The "Hype Audience" Rule
Caribbean dance is not watched in dead silence. An engaged audience powers the dancers:
Clap on the beat to keep the energy soaring
Cheer when crews execute a sharp level switch or freeze
Celebrate bravery, creativity, and teamwork!
Peer Feedback: Praise & Polish
After each crew performs, you will offer:
1 Specific Praise:
"I loved how in sync your waistline circles were during Block 2!"
1 Constructive Polish:
"Next time, make your final freeze even lower for bigger drama!"
Every dancer shines when the entire room lifts them up!

The "Mas Presentation" Class Showcase
15 Minutes
Arrange seating into a half-circle "roadside" audience. Distribute the Showcase Rubric Assessment Kit to audience members. Each crew performs their 32-count routine with full music and props.
Enforce the "Hype Audience" rule: the crowd claps on beat, waves support flags, and cheers for creative transitions! Immediately after each performance, invite 2 peers to give 1 "Praise" and 1 "Polish".
5
Self-Reflection & Unit Celebration
7 Minutes
Students complete the written self-reflection in the rubric packet. Gather in a standing circle for a closing Caribbean unity bow and class cheer: "One Band! One Sound!"
Intervention Strategies
• Group disagreement: Encourage voting or combining both ideas into a 4-count split sequence.
