Brain Gym
Your Brain is a Muscle!
Let's explore the magical brain cells inside your head and find out how practice makes them grow super-strong!
Today's Mission: Grow Your Brain Paths!
Meet the Team
The Brain's Tiny Workers!
Step 1 of 5
What is a Neuron?
Inside your brain are 86 billion tiny, amazing cells called neurons. They work together like a team to pass electric messages!
1
Dendrites (The Ears) Spiky arms that catch electrical messages from neighbors!
2
Axon (The Talking Tail) The long cord that shoots electric messages to the next neuron!
Neuron Anatomy Map
CELL BODY Soma
Axon
TERMINALS
Can you wiggle your fingers? That is neurons talking!
Hands-On Time!
Let's Build a Neuron!
Step 2 of 5
1
Roll the Body!
Take one pipe cleaner and roll it up tight like a spiral snail shell to make your cell body.
Cell Body (Soma)
2
Add Spiky Arms!
Wrap 2 short pieces of pipe cleaner around the spiral to make spiky dendrites!
Dendrites (Ears)
3
Attach the Tail!
Wrap one long pipe cleaner to the body. This is your long axon tail.
Axon (Tail)
4
Split the Ends!
Untwist the very end of your axon to make smaller terminals! Ready to connect.
Axon Terminals
Teachers: Give students 5-6 minutes to finish building.
Making Connections
How Neurons "Talk"
Step 3 of 5
Brain Connection
Neuron A (Tail)
The Synapse Gap
Chemical spark messages jump across the space!
Neuron B (Ear)
Touch Your Neurons Together!
When you learn something new, Neuron A shoots a spark to Neuron B!
Class Activity: Connect!
Hold your pipe cleaner neuron axon close to a partner's dendrite arms. That space in between is your brain synapse!
Can you pretend to send a "BZZT!" message to your partner?
The Power of Practice
How Brain Paths Are Made
Step 4 of 5
Attempt #1
The Rough Wild Grass
The first time you try something hard, like riding a bike or writing your letters, there is no path yet. It feels slow, tough, and confusing because your neuron's electric path is tiny!
Connection Strength: Weak & Slow
Attempt #100
The Smooth Dirt Path
Every single time you practice, you walk that path again. The grass disappears, and a smooth, fast dirt trail forms! Now the neuron message speeds through like lightning.
Connection Strength: Super Highway!
What is something that used to be hard for you, but is easy now?
Brain Challenge
Brain Power Quiz Time!
Step 5 of 5
Are You Ready to Play?
We are going to test our brains with a quick True or False quiz sheet!
Remember: Even if you get a question wrong, what happens? Your brain learns and grows!
True = Fact
False = Fiction
The Brain Growth Rule:
"Making mistakes and trying again makes the electric message in my neuron paths travel faster and stronger every day!"
Find your Brain True/False worksheet on your desk!
Mission Accomplished
Let's Reflect & Flex!
Wrap Up
How will you stretch your brain muscle?
Think of one specific hard thing you are practicing right now (math facts, spelling words, throwing a ball, reading chapter books).
"Today, my brain pathways grew when I learned _________!"
"Tomorrow, I am going to practice _________ to make my axon trail even smoother!"
You Are a Brain Gym Hero!
Remember, mistakes are just heavy weights that make your neuron pathways stronger!
Keep Stretching Your Mind!
Thank you for working out your brain today!
Pipe Cleaner Neurons Activity Guide
Brain Gym Labs
My Pipe Cleaner Neuron
Name:
Date:
Follow these steps to build your very own brain cell! Once you are done, we will connect our brain cells to send electrical messages.
My Lab Kit Supplies:
1 Long Pipe Cleaner (Body) 2 Short Pieces (Arms) 1 Long Tail (Axon)
Step 1
Roll the Body!
Take one long pipe cleaner. Start at one end and roll it in a spiral circle. Press it flat!
SPIKY SPIRAL (Soma)
Step 2
Add Listening Arms!
Wrap the 2 short pieces across your spiral body. Let the ends stick out like spiky branch arms.
DENDRITES (Ears)
Step 3
Twist the Long Tail!
Wrap one long pipe cleaner to the spiral body. Extend it straight outwards like a long tail.
AXON (Talking Tail)
Step 4
Split the Ends!
Unravel or split the very tip of your long tail. These are the terminals that shoot sparks to your friends!
SPARK TIPS
Lab Activity: The Partner Spark!
Put your neuron's tail (axon) close to your partner's spiky arms (dendrites). Do not touch them completely—leave a tiny space. This space is called the synapse gap!
Write & Reflect with your partner:
My Partner's Name:
What skill does your partner want to practice and grow?
"Every mistake is a new pathway growing!"

Brain is a Muscle: Lesson Script
Grade: 2nd Grade
Time: 30 Minutes
This step-by-step guide helps you deliver an interactive growth-mindset lesson. Use the bold talking points, facilitation cues, and management tips to guide students in explaining neuroplasticity simply.
Lesson Pacing Guide
| Time | Activity | Materials |
|---|
| 00 - 05 min | Meet the Neuron Team | Slides 1 - 2 |
| 05 - 15 min | Pipe Cleaner Build | Slide 3 & Guide |
| 15 - 20 min | Making Connections | Slide 4 |
| 20 - 25 min | Forest Trail & Quiz | Slides 5 - 6 & Quiz |
| 25 - 30 min | Reflect & Flex | Slide 7 |
Materials Needed
- 4 pipe cleaners per student (3 colors)
- Pipe Cleaner Activity Guide
- True/False Worksheet
- Pencils, markers/crayons
Slide 1 & 2: Meet the Neuron Team (0 - 5 Mins)
Intro
Say: "Boys and girls, today we are visiting the Brain Gym! Did you know your brain acts exactly like a muscle? When you try hard things, your brain physically changes and grows stronger! Inside your brain are billions of tiny electrical teammates called neurons..."
Explain Neuron Parts: Point to Slide 2. Show the Cell Body (the engine), the Dendrites (listening arms), and the Axon (the long speaking tail). Have students wiggle their fingers like spiky dendrites reaching out for electric messages!
Slide 3: Pipe Cleaner Neuron Build (5 - 15 Mins)
Build Guide
Say: "We are going to become neuroscientists and build our own model neuron! Pick up your long pipe cleaner and curl it like a spiral. This is your Cell Body..."
Build Cues: Guide them step-by-step alongside the Slide 3 graphics. Hand out the Pipe Cleaner Neurons Activity Guide.
2nd Grade Pacing Tip: Keep a timer for exactly 7-8 minutes for the physical build. Assist students struggling to wrap the short dendrite pieces around the body. Encourage fast-finishers to color their activity sheets.
