⚡ Today's Mission: Neuroplasticity!
The Brain is a Muscle!
Discover how your amazing brain grows stronger and faster every single time you practice!
Welcome to Your Mind Workout
Slide 1 of 6
MEET THE NEURON!
STAGE 1: DISCOVER
What is a Neuron?
Your brain contains billions of tiny, amazing messenger cells called neurons (new-rons).
They act like high-speed computers, sending tiny electrical sparks to help you think, walk, and learn! ⚡
Every thought you have is a tiny spark of electricity jumping between these cells!
The Three Key Parts:
🔵
SOMA (The Cell Body)
The center of the neuron that gathers all incoming messages.
🌿
DENDRITES (The Listeners)
The branch-like arms that catch sparks from other neurons.
🌾
AXON (The Sender)
The long tail that shoots messages away to other cells.
Your brain is a complex web of billions of connections!

NEURON BUILD TIME!
STAGE 2: CREATE
Build Your Own Neuron!
Grab your pipe cleaners and pony bead! Follow these 3 steps:
1
The Soma (Body)
Take one colorful pipe cleaner. Thread your colorful pony bead right to the center. Roll and twist the pipe cleaner into a tight ball around the bead!
🔵
2
The Dendrites
Take two shorter pipe cleaners. Wrap and twist them through your Soma ball so they branch out in all directions like wild tree fingers!
🌿
3
The Axon (Tail)
Take your final, longest pipe cleaner. Wrap one end firmly around your Soma, and let the rest stretch straight out to make a long, beautiful tail!
🌾
Be careful with the sharp ends of the pipe cleaners!

PRACTICE PATHWAYS
STAGE 3: CONNECT
How Your Brain Changes!
Learning something new is like walking through a thick, wild jungle. The first time is slow and really hard.
But every single time you PRACTICE a skill, you clear a little bit of the path!
Soon, that wild jungle path becomes a super-fast highway! 🚀
🌲🥾
First Attempt: The Jungle
Neurons aren't connected yet. You might stumble or feel frustrated. That is normal!
✂️🌿
With Practice: The Dirt Road
Neurons start linking up. Your brain cell branches get longer and start to touch!
⚡🚀
Keep Going: The Super Highway
A strong, permanent connection is built. The skill feels easy and automatic!
This amazing superpower is called "NEUROPLASTICITY"!
Slide 4 of 6
THE SPEED BLANKET
STAGE 4: DEEPEN
What is Myelin?
Every time you repeat a practice, your brain wraps your axon (the tail) in a special, protective blanket of insulation called myelin (my-eh-lin).
This myelin blanket makes electrical signals fly down the axon 100 times faster! 🏎️💨
Struggling and making mistakes is actually the sound of your brain spinning that magic myelin blanket around your neurons!
Struggle = Growth!
Just like lifting heavy weights makes your physical muscles grow, doing hard things makes your brain grow stronger and faster!
Mistakes make your brain spark! ⚡
Be proud of your mistakes—they mean your brain is growing!

LAB EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST:
1 Long Pipe Cleaner
2 Medium Pipe Cleaners
1 Pony Bead
My Awesome Brain!
Assembly Directions:
STEP 1 The Soma
Slide your pony bead to the middle of a medium pipe cleaner. Roll and twist the pipe cleaner into a ball around the bead. Leave some small loops sticking out!
This is the cell body 🔵
STEP 2 The Dendrites
Take your second medium pipe cleaner. Cut or bend it in half. Twist these pieces into your Soma ball so they stick out in all directions like tiny tree branches.
These catch messages 🌿
STEP 3 The Axon
Wrap one end of your longest pipe cleaner tightly around your Soma ball. Let the rest stretch straight out to make a long, proud tail!
This sends messages 🌾

0-5 MINS WELCOME & INTRO: THE MIND GYM
SAY: "Welcome to the Mind Gym, class! Did you know your brain is like a muscle? When you lift weights, your arm muscles get bigger. But how do we make our brain muscles bigger and faster?"
DO: Show Slide 1 & 2. Ask students to make a "muscle arm" pose, then point to their heads.
SAY: "Inside your brain, you have billions of microscopic super-computers called neurons. These cells pass tiny electrical sparks to each other to help you think! Today, we are going to build our very own model of a neuron to see how they work."
5-15 MINS HANDS-ON NEURON ASSEMBLY
DO: Distribute pipe cleaners, beads, and the "Neuron Builder Activity Guide." Show Slide 3.
SAY: "Let's assemble our neurons together step-by-step. First, thread your bead onto one of your medium pipe cleaners. This represents the Soma, which is the control center of your brain cell. Wrap and twist it into a ball!"
SAY: "Now, take your other short pipe cleaners and twist them into the ball so they stick out like branches. These are Dendrites. They are the listeners! They catch electrical messages from your friends' neurons."
SAY: "Finally, take your longest pipe cleaner. Wrap one end around your Soma and stretch it straight out. This long tail is the Axon. It is the sender! It shoots the messages away to other cells."
