Phase 1
Seed Germination: The Sprout Phase (15 Mins)
Students explore how seeds remain dormant until receiving specific environmental cues (water, warmth, oxygen). Use soaked lima beans to allow students to easily peel off the seed coat and find the baby embryo.
Instructional Steps:
Project Slide 2 (Germination) . Ask: "What does a seed need to wake up?" Highlight that soil is NOT required for initial germination (only moisture and temperature).
Distribute soaked lima beans. Guide students to gently remove the outer skin (seed coat) and split the bean in half.
Instruct them to use hand lenses to locate the embryo (baby plant) and the cotyledon (food storage).
Have students document their findings on Part 1 of the Bloom Builders Worksheet .
Teacher Tip Have dry seeds on hand so students can compare the rigid, dormant dry seed with the soft, expanded germinated seed.

Phase 2
Pollination: The Partner Stage (20 Mins)
Students examine flower anatomy and learn how plants recruit animals (bees, butterflies, bats) or use wind to transfer pollen from the anther (male part) to the stigma (female part) for fertilization.
Instructional Steps:
Project Slide 3 (Pollination) . Discuss flower anatomy. Emphasize that flowers are beautiful and sweet-scented not for humans, but to attract specific animal partners.
Demonstrate mechanical pollination: Use a cotton swab (representing a bee) to rub cocoa powder (representing pollen) from one simulated paper flower's "anther" to another flower's sticky "stigma" (double-sided tape).
Instruct students to complete Part 2 of their worksheet, sketching the pollination process and labeling the main anatomy involved.
Key Question "What would happen to cherry trees if all the bees in an orchard suddenly disappeared?" (No fruit/seeds would form).
Phase 3
Seed Dispersal: The Great Escape (15 Mins)
Seeds must travel away from the parent plant to avoid competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients. Plants have evolved structural adaptations to disperse seeds using wind, water, animals, or explosion.
Instructional Steps:
Project Slide 4 (Dispersal) . Introduce the 4 modes of dispersal: Wind (dandelions), Water (coconuts), Animal Eating (berries), Animal Hitchhiking (burrs).
Direct students to complete Part 3 of their worksheet, matching seed adaptation sketches with their correct dispersal mechanism.

Stage 2 Pollination Partnership
The Pollen Transfer
Plants cannot move to find a mate, so they rely on partners or vectors to transfer pollen and produce fertile seeds.

Stage 3 Seed Dispersal
The Great Escape
Why can't seeds just drop straight down? They need sunlight, space, and water away from the parent tree!
Wind
Lightweight seeds with wings or parachutes (e.g., dandelions, maples) fly far away.
Water
Buoyant seeds with fibrous husks (e.g., coconuts) float across oceans or down rivers.
Animal Eating
Tasty fruits tempt animals to eat them; the seed is later dropped elsewhere in droppings.
