The Hook: Mystery Evidence (5 min)
Present the Feather and Plastic Egg . Ask the class: "I found these two items outside. Which animal group left them behind? How do you know?"
PROMPT:
"Do only birds lay eggs? Do only birds have feathers? We're going to find out!"

Investigation: Video Observation (10 min)
Watch "Exploring the World of Birds" (0:00-1:45) . Use the following pause points to facilitate discussion:
0:56 - Warm-blooded
Explain: "It means their body stays the same temp even when it's cold outside. Like us!"
1:34 - Wings
Ask: "If all birds have wings, can all birds fly? (Penguins/Ostriches)"
List the 5 traits on the board as they are mentioned: Warm-blooded, Feathers, Eggs, 2 Legs, Wings.

Activity: Bird ID Checklist (20 min)
Students work as detectives to compare a Blue Jay , a Fruit Bat , and a Bumblebee . They must check off which traits each animal has to prove which one is the "True Bird."

Closure: Debrief (10 min)
Review the checklist together. Discuss why the bat is tricky (it has wings and flies) but fails the "Bird Test" because it doesn't have feathers and doesn't lay eggs.
