Other behavioral adaptations rely on complex social cooperation. In the arid plains of southern Africa, meerkats survive through rigorous teamwork. While the clan digs for insects and scorpions, one designated sentry stands erect on an elevated termite mound, watching the sky for raptors. If a predator appears, the sentry lets out a piercing alarm bark, sending every family member scurrying into safety underground.
