Periodical cicadas spend most of their lives underground.

Periodical Cicadas
Look at the ground! Many bugs are coming out. These bugs are called cicadas (si-KAY-dahs). They have orange eyes and wings. They sing a loud song.
Some bugs are called periodical cicadas. They stay in the dirt for a long time. They wait for 13 or 17 years. Then, they all come up at once.
There are many species, or kinds, of cicadas. Some come up every year. But periodical cicadas come up on a schedule.
They come above ground to reproduce. This means they make new bug babies. These babies are called offspring.
Coming out together helps them stay safe. Predators are animals that want to eat them. Birds are predators.
There are many cicadas. The birds cannot eat them all. Most of the bugs stay safe. They can live and have offspring. Then the cycle starts all over again!
