Step 2: The dam blocks/slows the flow of the rushing stream.
Step 3: Water pools up behind the dam, creating a pond or wetland.
Step 4: Still water allows amphibians and pond plants to move in.

Discussion Deep-Dive
The Beaver's Removal
If beavers leave, the dam eventually breaks. The pond drains, the wetland disappears, and the ecosystem reverts back to a stream. This would destroy the habitat for the amphibians and fish that relied on the still water.
Keystone Metaphor
A "Keystone" is the top stone of an arch that holds all other stones in place. If you pull it out, the whole arch falls. Beavers are like that stone—their presence holds the wetland ecosystem together.
