What is a Cell?
Imagine you are building a giant tower out of tiny plastic bricks. Every living thing on Earth—from a giant elephant to a small blade of grass—is built in a similar way! Instead of plastic bricks, living things are made of cells . Cells are the smallest units of life. They are so tiny that you need a powerful microscope to see them.
Animal Cells: The Flexible Builders
Your body is made of trillions of animal cells. These cells have a soft, thin outer layer called the cell membrane . It acts like a gatekeeper, letting good things like oxygen in and waste products out. Inside, the nucleus acts as the "brain" or control center, telling the cell what to do. The rest of the cell is filled with a jelly-like substance called cytoplasm , where other small parts float and do their jobs.
Plant Cells: The Sturdy Skyscrapers
Plant cells have many of the same parts as animal cells, but they have two extra features that make them unique. First, they have a tough, thick cell wall outside the membrane. This gives the plant its stiff shape so it can stand up tall. Second, they have chloroplasts . These are tiny green factories that use sunlight to make food for the plant through a process called photosynthesis.

Unlike animals, plants can't move around to find shelter or food. They have to stand tall in the wind, rain, and sun. To do this, every single plant cell is built like a tiny fortress. The secret to their strength is the cell wall . This is a stiff, protective layer that surrounds the cell membrane. It acts like a skeleton for the plant, allowing trees to grow hundreds of feet tall without falling over.
