Microscope Mission Lesson Guide Self-Contained Science Lab Guide
Microscope Mission: Parts & Discovery
Grades 6–10 Life Science
Estimated Time: 45–50 Mins
Core Mission: Students learn to safely handle a compound light microscope and identify its 6 essential parts (Eyepiece, Arm, Stage, Objective Lenses, Focus Knobs, Light/Base) through high-contrast visual cues and immediate physical touch.
Learning Targets
Point & Identify: Locate 6 major parts on physical lab microscopes when cued.
Function Match: State or match the job of each part using simple 3-word action cues.
Safe Handling: Demonstrate 2-handed transport (one on Arm, one under Base).
Sensory & Lab Materials
Compound classroom microscopes (1 per 1–2 students).
6-color dot stickers for tactile color-coding on microscope parts.
Microscope Explorer Slides & printed Student Lab Worksheets.
Structured Lesson Flow (50 Minutes)
1. Hook & Safety Rule: "The Two-Hand Hug" 10 Mins
Teacher Action: Model the Two-Hand Hug: hand 1 grips the sturdy Arm, hand 2 cups beneath the Base. Have every student stand and practice the grip motion in the air before touching lab equipment.
2. Guided Visual Exploration ("I Do / We Do") 15 Mins
Teacher Action: Project the Microscope Explorer Slides. Reveal one part at a time. Call out its action chant (e.g., "Eyepiece = Look inside!" ). Students immediately point to that part on their own microscope and verify the matching color sticker.
3. Hands-On Lab Scavenger Hunt ("You Do Together") 15 Mins
Teacher Action: Distribute the Student Worksheet. Students work in pairs to touch each real component, test moving the stage knobs gently, check the light switch, and stamp/check off their lab mission log.
4. Review & Visual Exit Check ("Show What You Know") 10 Mins
Teacher Action: Teacher calls out: "Touch the part where the light shines!" Students put a finger on the base light. Complete matching activity on Page 2 of the student packet.

Student Success Metric
Tier 1 (Emerging)
Match pre-cut color-coded picture labels directly onto microscope color stickers. Non-verbal pointing response accepted.
Points to 4 of 6 parts correctly on physical microscope.
Tier 2 (Targeted)
Use student worksheet with word bank to write names or draw connecting lines to matching diagram boxes.
Labels 5 of 6 parts and identifies at least 2 basic functions.
Tier 3 (Extension)
Distinguish between Coarse vs. Fine focus knobs and explain why we carry with 2 hands instead of 1.
Full labeling + oral explanation of microscope care rules.
1-Minute Informal Assessment Checklist
Demonstrated safe two-hand carry hold
Located Eyepiece when asked to "look"
Turned focus knob gently without forcing
Pointed to Stage where glass slide rests
