Magnetic Magic Teacher Guide
Teacher Guide
Magnetic Magic • 1st Grade
Duration: 30-40 Minutes
Objective
Students will use vocabulary (attract, repel) to describe observations of how magnets interact based on their poles.
Materials Needed
- Magnetic Magic Slides
- Vocabulary Sort Activity
- Scissors & Glue Sticks
- Cardboard Magnet Props (for closure)
1 Warm-Up: "North-South" Simon Says (5 min)
Play a movement game to prime students for the magnet concepts.
North-South (Opposites)
Action: HUG (Attract). Explain that opposites like to stay together.
South-South (Likes)
Action: RUN AWAY (Repel). Explain that the same poles push away.
2 Video & Anchor Chart (10 min)
Video: "Magnet Race Car!" (72 seconds)
0:24
Pause for Prediction: South is facing South. What will happen to the car? Toward or away?
0:38
Discuss Repel: Introduce "Repel." It means to push away. Notice the magnets aren't touching!
0:43
Prediction Flip: Now North faces South. Will it do the same thing? Why not?
3 Vocabulary Sort (15 min)
Students work independently or in pairs to cut and sort magnet pairs.
Teacher Tip: Walk around and ask students, "Are these poles the same or different? So will they attract or repel?"
4 Closure: Choral Response (5 min)
Hold up giant cardboard magnet props.
- Show N and S facing each other → Students shout "ATTRACT!"
- Show S and S facing each other → Students shout "REPEL!"
- Show N and N facing each other → Students shout "REPEL!"
