1
A Cold Camp & a Scary Dream
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover hide in the cold woods to rest. They are exhausted, hungry, and have almost no money left. As Percy sleeps, he has a terrifying nightmare about a deep, dark pit with a cold, shadowy voice whispering about the stolen master bolt.
2
Grover's Pink Poodle Friend
In the morning, Percy wakes up and sees Grover talking to a fluffy pink poodle wearing a jeweled collar! Grover explains that because he is a satyr (half-boy, half-goat), he can speak animal language. The dog's name is Gladiola.
3
A Runaway with a Big Plan
Gladiola ran away from a wealthy family that lived nearby because he disliked having his fur dyed pink. But Gladiola saw missing-dog posters offering a $200 reward to anyone who returns him. He generously offers to help the three heroes!
4
Train Tickets Heading West
Gladiola agrees to go back to his owners so the friends can collect the $200 cash reward. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover use the reward money to buy three train tickets to Denver. Thanks to the poodle's kind sacrifice, their quest can continue west!

Simple vocabulary; captures the central cause-and-effect relationship.

“Because Grover can speak to animals, Gladiola the poodle agrees to return to his rich family so the heroes can use the $200 reward for train tickets out west.”
Uses complex sentence structure with a dependent clause (‘Because...’).
Teacher Think-Aloud Modeling Script
“Watch how I make a gist. A gist is not the whole chapter! It is just the biggest idea. First, I ask: Who is the most important helper? Grover and Gladiola the poodle. Next: What did they do? They made a plan to return Gladiola for $200. Last: Why does that matter to Percy? Because they need train tickets to keep going west on their quest! When I snap those three clues together, I get one powerful sentence: Grover and his friends return a runaway poodle to get reward money for train tickets. Now you try with your partner!”
