Spelling Rules: Position in the Word
Where do we hear the sound?
Middle of a Syllable
When the vowel sound is trapped in the middle, choose the internal vowel team:
oi coi n, joi n, voi ce
ou hou nd, shou t, rou nd
au hau nt, lau nch, fau lt
End of a Syllable / Word
English words rarely end in I or U! We use Y or W at the end:
oy toy , joy , enjoy
ow cow , now , how l (before l/n)
aw jaw , draw , yaw n (before n/l)
Rule Recap: If the diphthong comes at the end, use the letter that includes Y or W! Step 4: Sound-Spelling Concept

hound scout brown howl spoil enjoy
Roy was a proud young boy who lived on a farm south of town. His favorite pal was Scout, a quick brown hound with a loud bark. At dawn, a sudden noise gave Scout a big fright. Scout ran out into the woods and did not turn around.
Roy began to shout, “Scout! Come back, Scout!” Roy did not want this day to spoil. He walked down the muddy soil and checked near the round pond. Soon, Roy heard a soft howl from the damp ground. He looked down and saw his loyal hound trapped under a fallen pine branch!
Roy bent his knees and hoisted the heavy wood. Scout jumped up with pure joy. Roy gave the hound a chew toy and a sweet treat. Now they could enjoy a sunny stroll home.

hawk claws launch flew clue fruit
At early dawn, a wild hawk perched high on a lawn fence. The hawk spread its gray wings and looked down at the crawl space near the barn. A gust of raw wind blew through the tall pines, but the brave hawk did not pause.
Drew and Sue had a new glider to launch from the green lawn. “Look at the hawk!” Drew said in an excited voice. “Watch how it can swoop and glide! That gives me a true clue for how to aim our plane.” Drew held the blue string while Sue launched the glider into the cool sky.
The glider flew smooth and high, soaring right past the watchful hawk. The hawk let out a sharp squawk, curved its sharp claws, and drew up into the clouds. Drew and Sue chewed on fresh fruit and cheered for the grand flight.

Paul and Roy stood on the wooden deck of the small scout boat at dawn. [14]
A cool autumn breeze blew from the south, tossing the blue water into white foam. [29]
Beside them sat Barnaby, a loyal hound who loved to roam on the open bay. [44]
Suddenly, a dark storm cloud flew over the coast and brought heavy rain. [57]
“Look out!” shouted Paul. “The wind might spoil our trip if we do not steer!” [73]
Roy took hold of the wood wheel and kept the bow pointing straight ahead. [87]
High above, a wild hawk used its sharp claws to grip the mast against the gale. [103]
Barnaby let out a loud howl and placed his damp paw right on the deck hatch. [119]
Underneath the hatch was a shiny gold coin that had rolled into a small groove. [134]
“Good boy!” yelled Roy with pure joy. “You found the lost coin from our troop fund!” [150]
Soon the storm blew past, the moon glowed bright, and the crew sailed safely into port. [167]
