Multilingual Scaffolds & Language Supports
1. Suffix Cognate Bridge:
Highlight that English -ly functions just like Romance language adverbs: Spanish/Portuguese -mente (lento → lentamente ) and French -ment . Ask multilingual learners: "How do you say 'quickly' in your home language?"
2. Gestural Total Physical Response (TPR):
Pair every adverb with a distinct hand movement (whispering fingers to lips for quietly , slow motion arms for slowly ). Physical memory bridges vocabulary barriers for emerging bilinguals.
Teacher Watch-Out: Common Misconceptions
Not all -ly words are adverbs: Words like friendly , lovely , and lonely describe nouns (adjectives). If students ask, teach the test: "Can you do something in that way?" (e.g., You don't "run friendly," you are a friendly person).
