Pumpkins and Plumbing Teacher Guide
Pumpkins & Plumbing
Teacher Lesson Guide • 3rd Grade Science
45-50 Minutes
Standard: Structure & Function
Objective
Students will demonstrate understanding of the xylem's function in plants by observing water transport in celery and using the "water slide" analogy to explain how plants move resources.
Materials
- Celery stalks (with leaves)
- Red or blue food coloring
- Clear cups & water
- Observation Journals
Lesson Flow
5 min
Warm-up: The Ground-to-Leaf Mystery
Ask: "How does water get from the dirt all the way up to the leaves of a tall plant?" Use the slides to show a giant pumpkin and prompt student ideas. Accept all answers (drinking, roots, etc.) to gauge prior knowledge.
10 min
Video Viewing & Discussion
Watch "Why Do Pumpkins Get So Big?". Focus on the 2:45-3:20 mark. Discuss the "water slide" analogy for xylem and the "Lego block" analogy for cells.
Key Discussion Question:
"Why would a giant pumpkin need MORE of these tubes (xylem) than a regular pumpkin?"
25 min
Activity: Xylem Detectives
- Setup: Distribute clear cups with water and heavy food coloring.
- Prediction: Students draw their celery stalk in their journals and predict where the color will go.
- Observation: Place celery stalks in the water. If waiting for next day, use time to discuss the cross-section.
- Dissection: If checking after 20 mins, cut the celery base. Students look for the tiny colored dots (the xylem tubes).
5 min
Closure: Defining Xylem
Students complete the "Final Detective Report" in their journal, defining xylem using the "water slide" analogy. Share definitions as a class.
Misconception Alert
Students often think plants "drink" water like humans do through a mouth. Clarify that xylem are specialized structures that act more like a plumbing system or a bundle of straws, pulling water up against gravity.

How Giant Pumpkins Get Their Water
3rd Grade Botanical Science
The Mystery
How does water get from the dirt all the way up to the leaves of a plant?
Think about a plant that is taller than you. How does the water move UP?
Giant Growth!
The World Record Pumpkin:
1,226 kilograms
(As heavy as a small car!)
Daily Water Needed:
600 Liters
(That's two full bathtubs!)
🎃
Building Blocks
Living things are made of cells.
Think of cells like Lego blocks.
To build a BIGGER tower, you need...
More blocks!

Let's Watch!
SciShow Kids
Embedded media
Watch closely for the "Water Slide" analogy!
Meet the Xylem
Xylem (zy-lem)
A tube-like structure that carries water to different parts of the plant.
"It looks a bit like a water slide!"
One-Way Up!
Xylem Detectives
1
Draw your celery stalk in your journal.
2
Predict: Where will the colored water go?
3
Wait 20 minutes (or overnight) and check!

Final Report
Complete your journal entry by writing a definition for Xylem.

Phase 1: Prediction
Sketch your celery stalk in the cup
The water in the cup is dyed with color. Where do you think that color will go?
Phase 2: Observation
Zoom In: The Cross-Section
Look at the very bottom of your celery stalk (where it was cut). Draw what you see. Use colored pencils to show the xylem tubes.
Describe the tiny dots you found:
