Objective
Students will identify the differences between Pilots and Mission Specialists and design a specialized tool for an International Space Station (ISS) repair task, considering the constraints of microgravity and EVA (Extravehicular Activity) gear.

1. Warm-up: The Astronaut List (5 min)

Ask: "What do astronauts do all day?" Brainstorm a list on the board.
Address Misconceptions:
Common Myth: They just fly the ship. Fact: Most are scientists (biologists, chemists).
Common Myth: They are always floating for fun. Fact: They are doing hard physical work and experiments.

Key Concept: Roles
Pilot: Flying and landing the craft.
Mission Specialist: Experiments, ship maintenance, satellite launches.
Discussion Anchor (17:23)
Ask: "What challenges do astronauts face living on the ISS for months?" (Wait for: space, food, gravity, loneliness).
3. Mission Specialist Challenge (25 min)

Divide students into "Mission Specialist Teams." Hand out Orbit Mission Scenarios and Space Tool Blueprints .
The Design Constraints (The "Hard Parts"):
Pressurized Gloves: Astronaut gloves are thick and hard to bend. Small buttons are impossible!
Microgravity: Tools float away if not tethered. You can't just "set something down."
Safety: No sharp edges that could tear a space suit.
Circulate and ask: "How will your astronaut hold this while wearing a puffy oven mitt?"
4. Mission Debrief (5 min)

Groups present their designs. Focus on: What is the tool's name? and How does it solve the specific problem?

A small asteroid has dented a solar panel connector on the outside of the ISS. The panel can't turn toward the sun!
Task:
Design a tool that can pry open a bent metal hinge and snap a cable back into place.

Zucchini Rescue
The external veggie module has a stuck water valve. If the zucchinis don't get water in 2 hours, the experiment is lost!
Task:
Design a tool that can twist a circular valve handle that is very slippery and hard to reach.

Satellite Jam
A weather satellite is stuck in the cargo bay . Its antenna is caught on a piece of packing tape!
Task:
Design a tool that can safely snip the tape and push the satellite away into orbit without scratching it.
Mission H-007
Hull Patch
A tiny meteorite has caused a micro-leak in the hull. You need to apply a sealing patch, but the area is very hot!
Task:
Design a tool that holds a sticky patch and presses it firmly against the curved hull of the station.
Mission B-333
Squid Transfer
The Bio-Research Pod needs to be moved to a different part of the station. It contains sensitive squid eggs that can't be shaken!
Task:
Design a "soft-grip" carrying tool that locks onto the pod and prevents it from wobbling while you drift.

Lens Clear
The Earth Observation Camera lens is covered in space dust. Pictures of Earth are coming back blurry!
Task:
Design a cleaning tool that can brush away dust without scratching the glass lens.
