What is a Steam Engine?
A steam engine is a machine that uses heat to create movement . It works by boiling water to make steam. Just like the steam you see rising from a hot bowl of soup, this steam is very strong! When you trap steam inside a container, it pushes hard against anything in its way.
How It Works
Inside the engine, a fire burns coal or wood to heat up a big tank of water called a boiler . As the water boils, it turns into steam. This steam travels through a pipe into a tube called a cylinder .
Inside the cylinder is a piece called a piston . The steam pushes the piston back and forth, sort of like how you push your feet on bicycle pedals. This back-and-forth movement is used to turn wheels on a train or a big paddle on a boat!
The First Engines
Hundreds of years ago, mines would often fill up with water. Inventors like Thomas Newcomen and James Watt built steam engines to pump that water out. Before these engines, people had to use horses or their own muscles to do the hard work. Steam engines were much stronger and never got tired!
Fun Fact!
The "Rocket" was a famous early steam locomotive built in 1829. It could travel at 29 miles per hour, which was incredibly fast back then!
