The Hook: Who is the Dino?
Use Slide 2. Show the T-Rex, Turtle, and Pterodactyl. Ask: "Which of these are dinosaurs?" Listen for misconceptions (many kids think Pterodactyls are dinosaurs).

Video: The Giant Flyer
Watch Quetzalcoatlus: The Biggest Animal Who Ever Flew! Pause at 1:36 to highlight the "Dino Rule": Dinosaurs have legs straight under their bodies. Pterosaurs and Crocs have legs that sprawl out to the sides.

Dino or Not? Sorting Game
Hand out the Sorting Cards and Mats . Students work in pairs to look at the animal's legs and body shape. Is it a dinosaur, or just an ancient neighbor?
10 Min
The Big Reveal
Discuss the Quetzalcoatlus. Why isn't it a dinosaur? (It's a flying reptile/pterosaur). Review the vocabulary: Paleontologist, Extinct, Fossil.
Detective Answer Key
Animal Name Classification Clue T-Rex Dinosaur Legs straight under hips. Triceratops Dinosaur Legs straight under hips. Quetzalcoatlus Not a Dinosaur Pterosaur (Flying Reptile). Prehistoric Crocodile Not a Dinosaur Legs sprawl to the side. Ancient Turtle Not a Dinosaur Shell and sprawled legs. Diplodocus Dinosaur Legs straight like pillars.
Pro Tips for Success
• The Giraffe Trick: Tell students that a Quetzalcoatlus was as tall as a giraffe. Have them look up at the ceiling to imagine its height!
• Leg Demo: Have students stand up. Stand with legs straight down (Dinosaur). Then squat and put elbows out (Pterosaur/Croc).
• Misconception Alert: Remind them that just because it lived millions of years ago doesn't mean it was a dinosaur. We have turtles today, and they had ancient grandpas who weren't dinosaurs either!
