Las 3 Grandes Palabras de Ciencia • 3 Big Science Words
Guía / Helper
1. MASA (MASS) Pesado
20 g
Balanza / Scale
¿Qué es?: Cuánta materia ("cosas") tiene dentro. (Amount of stuff)
Pregunta: "¿Qué tan pesado es?" / How heavy?
Unidad / Unit: Gramos / Grams (\(\text{g}\))
2. VOLUMEN (VOLUME) Espacio
10 cm³
Regla / Ruler
¿Qué es?: Cuánto espacio ocupa. (Space it takes up)
Pregunta: "¿Qué tan grande es?" / How big?
Unidad / Unit: \(\text{cm}^3\)
3. DENSIDAD (DENSITY) Apretado
(How crowded)
Pregunta: "¿Qué tan lleno está?" / How packed?
Fórmula: \(\text{Masa} \div \text{Volumen}\)
Ejemplo Visual: Almohada Suave vs. Ladrillo Pesado (Pillow vs Brick)
Almohada
Almohada / Pillow Partículas separadas / Spread out.
➡️ Baja Densidad (Ligero)
Ladrillo
Ladrillo / Brick Partículas muy juntas / Tightly packed.
➡️ Alta Densidad (Pesado)
Hazlo Ahora • Do Now: ¿Qué caja está más llena? (Which is more crowded?)
5 Min
Caja A / Box A
Masa / Mass = 4 puntos (4 g)
Caja B / Box B
Masa / Mass = 8 puntos (8 g)

Why density stays same?
Bloque Grande (Big)
Masa / Mass: 40 g
Volumen / Vol: 20 cm³
Densidad = 2
¡CORTAR!
Masa / Mass: 20 g
Volumen / Vol: 10 cm³
Densidad = 2
(Density stays the same!)
Práctica Matemática • Math Practice (\(\text{Masa} \div \text{Volumen}\))
Bloque 1: Arcilla / Clay
Masa = \(20\text{ g}\), Volumen = \(10\text{ cm}^3\)
\(20 \div 10 = \) \(\text{g/cm}^3\)
Bloque 2: Metal
Masa = \(40\text{ g}\), Volumen = \(10\text{ cm}^3\)
\(40 \div 10 = \) \(\text{g/cm}^3\)

Lab Sheet: The 3 Wooden Blocks Experiment
Our Lab Question
"We have 3 blocks of pine wood (Small, Medium, Big). Will they have the SAME density or DIFFERENT density ?"
My Prediction (Circle one & complete):
I think the 3 blocks will have the [ SAME / DIFFERENT ] density because they are all made of .
Partner Jobs
1 Scale Helper: Puts block on scale and reads grams.
2 Ruler Helper: Measures Length, Width, Height.
3 Writer: Writes down the numbers in the table.
Lab Tools & Rules
3 Pine Wood Blocks (Small, Medium, Big)
1 Gram Scale & 1 Ruler
Rule: Zero the scale before weighing each block!
Easy Lab Steps (Check off as you go!)
Step 1: Set scale to 0. Press "Tare" or "Zero" so it shows \(0\text{ g}\).
Step 2: Weigh Block #1. Put Block #1 on the scale. Write the mass (g) in Table 1.
Step 3: Measure sides. Use your ruler to measure Length, Width, and Height (cm).
Step 4: Repeat for Blocks #2 & #3. Measure and weigh the other two blocks.
Step 5: Do the Math! Turn to page 2 to divide and find the density.

Part 2
1 Table 1: Measurements (From Scale and Ruler)
| Wood Block | Mass (\(\text{g}\))
(Scale) | Length (\(\text{cm}\)) | Width (\(\text{cm}\)) | Height (\(\text{cm}\)) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Block #1 (Small) | | | | |
| Block #2 (Medium) | | | | |
| Block #3 (Big) | | | | |
2 Table 2: Density Results (\(\text{Mass} \div \text{Volume}\))
| Wood Block | Mass (\(\text{g}\))
(Weight) | Volume (\(\text{cm}^3\))
(\(L \times W \times H\)) | Density (\(\text{g/cm}^3\))
(\(\text{Mass} \div \text{Volume}\)) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Block #1 (Small) | | | |
| Block #2 (Medium) | | | |
| Block #3 (Big) | | | |
What Did We Discover?
1. Look at your density numbers in Table 2:
All 3 blocks had the density (about \(\text{g/cm}^3\)).
2. Circle the correct rule:
When an object gets bigger, its weight and size grow together. So its density stays:

density mass (weight) volume (space) heavier crowded
Look at the 3 boxes below. All 3 boxes are the same size (\(10\text{ cm}^3\)) :
Each box has 6 dots, but each dot has a different weight!
Box A
Light dots (\(1\text{ g}\) each)
Weight = \(6\text{ g}\)
Box B
Medium dots (\(2\text{ g}\) each)
Weight = \(12\text{ g}\)
Box C
Heavy dots (\(3\text{ g}\) each)
Weight = \(18\text{ g}\)
1. Why does Box C have a higher density than Box A?
Both boxes take up the same space (volume), but Box C is more dense because each piece inside is , so it has more total (mass).
2. CER Question: Which box has the highest density? Claim • Evidence • Reasoning
⭐ MY CLAIM (Answer):
Box has the highest density.
⭐ MY EVIDENCE (Numbers from picture):
All 3 boxes have the same size (\(10\text{ cm}^3\)), but Box C has the heaviest weight of grams.
⭐ MY REASONING (Science rule):
When more weight is packed into the same amount of space, the object is [ MORE DENSE / LESS DENSE ] .
