The Master Chemists
Fungi: Secret Thread Spieces
Fungi aren't plants—they don't make their own food! Instead, they grow microscopic underground threads called mycelium that weave through dead logs and leaves.
- Weapons: Enzymes (fluids) that break down tough structural wood fibers.
- Examples: Bread mold, mushrooms, toadstools, shelf fungi.
- Underground Power: A single fungus colony can stretch across miles of soil!
Detective Focus: Mycelium
The mushroom you see above ground is just the flower of the fungus. The real detective work happens underground. Mycelium fibers dissolve dead things and suck back up the valuable carbon and minerals.

Microscopic Giants
Bacteria are so small that a single teaspoon of healthy garden soil contains up to one billion of them!

Bacteria: Invisible Cleanup Crew
Bacteria work in enormous, unseen populations to consume soft organic debris. They break down materials down to simple nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus molecules that can easily dissolve in water.
- Speed: In warm, damp conditions, bacteria divide and multiply every 20 minutes!
- Heat Makers: Their metabolic activity generates so much heat it makes compost piles steaming hot!

The Mechanical Shredders
Invertebrates: Earth's Excavators
Invertebrates are animals without backbones. They chew up leaves, cardboard, and rotting wood into smaller bits, preparing the surface area for bacteria and fungi to process.
Earthworms
Eat dirt and dead matter; leave nutrient-rich castings.
Pillbugs
Roll up and eat decomposing cellulose material.
Beetles
Carve paths in dead wood, allowing air & water inside.
The Worm Magic
Worms digest material and release castings (poop), which is filled with nutrients like nitrates and potassium. This instantly fertilizes surrounding plants!
Real-World Superpower:
Aeration—digging tunnels lets plant roots breathe oxygen!
