The Royal Hook (Minutes 0 - 10)
"Hear ye, hear ye! King Chaos has lost his favorite golden crown inside the Castle Treasury! Because he threw toys, food, clothes, and tools into one big pile, the royal helpers can't find anything! Today, you are the King's sorting wizards. We must organize the treasury so the King can find his crown in less than 5 seconds!"
Instructional Goal: Connect physical clutter to data clutter.
1 Direct Instruction: Demystifying "Attributes" (Minutes 10 - 20)
Explain that computers organize data just like we organize rooms. Before sorting, we must look closely at each object's attributes (features).
Color e.g., Red, Blue, Green
Easy to see immediately. Visual grouping.
Size e.g., Small, Large
Relative dimension comparison.
Function (Type) e.g., Toy, Food, Tool
What the item actually does.
Teacher Script & Check For Understanding:
Ask: "Look at your shoe. What color is it? Is it big like a giant's shoe or small like a mouse's shoe? What is its job or function?"Explain: "Color, size, and job are called attributes ! Computers use these exact descriptions to sort millions of pictures in seconds."

2 Guided Practice: Tower Sorting (Minutes 20 - 30)
Use the Kingdom Sorters Slide Deck (Slide 3) to demonstrate. Present a mixed group of 4 items: a big red apple, a small blue toy car, a big blue shield, and a small red cherry.
Demonstrate Sorting Rules:
Rule 1 (By Color): Left Tower = Red Items (Apple, Cherry) | Right Tower = Blue Items (Car, Shield).Rule 2 (By Function): Left Tower = Food Items (Apple, Cherry) | Right Tower = Play/Battle (Car, Shield).
Key Insight: The same item can land in different categories depending on which attribute rule we choose!
3 Unplugged Activity: Attribute Quest (Minutes 30 - 45)
Distribute copies of the Attribute Quest Cards and Castle Sorting Mats . (Have cards pre-cut or let students cut them if fine-motor development allows).
Step 1: Single Attribute Sort
Students sort all 12 cards using simple attributes. Ask them to sort everything by Color (Red vs. Blue vs. Green). Then sweep, and sort by Size (Big vs. Small).
Step 2: Dual Attribute Quest
Challenge students to find items that match two criteria. "Find an item that is both RED and a TOY ." Or "Identify items that are SMALL and FOOD ."
Database Connection: Explain that computers perform "searches" by checking these dual rules. When we search for a specific video or picture, the system filters out everything that doesn't match both tags!
