Why Do Cells Split?
Have you ever wondered how you grow taller each year? Or how a tiny scratch on your knee disappears after a few days? It isn't magic—it’s your cells! Your body is made of trillions of tiny building blocks called cells. To help you grow or heal, your cells have to make more of themselves. They do this through a process called cell division .
The Secret Instructions
Before a cell can split, it needs a plan. Deep inside the nucleus (the "brain" of the cell), there are special instructions called DNA. Think of DNA like a giant recipe book for building YOU. Before the cell divides, it makes a perfect copy of all those instructions. This way, both new cells will know exactly what to do!
The Big Divide
Once the instructions are copied, the cell gets ready to pull apart. The nucleus splits into two, and then the whole cell pinches in the middle. It’s like squeezing a piece of playdough until it snaps into two separate balls. This process is called mitosis . When it’s finished, you have two brand-new "daughter cells."

Because DNA is so important, your body keeps it safe. Almost every single one of your trillions of cells has its own copy of your DNA. The Twisted Ladder
If you could zoom in and look at DNA, it would look like a ladder that has been twisted around and around. Scientists call this shape a double helix . The "rungs" of this twisted ladder are made of four special chemicals. The order of these chemicals acts like a code, similar to how letters make words in a book.
