Calendar Clash Teacher Guide Lesson Plan & Facilitation Guide Duration: 60 Minutes
Calendar Clash
Functional language for making, confirming, and rescheduling appointments.
Target Level
Intermediate (A2-B1)
Focus Skills
Speaking & Listening
Visual Anchors
Calendars & Analog Clocks
Learning Objectives
Initiate: Propose meetings using varied structures (e.g., "Do you want to...?", "Are you free...?").
Negotiate: Accept arrangements or politely decline while offering a clear alternative.
Coordinate: Compare visual schedules (calendars and times) orally to find overlapping free slots.
Reschedule: Use polite apologetic frameworks (e.g., "I'm afraid I can't...") to shift pre-booked events.
Bundle Checklist
Clash Course Slides: Lesson delivery
Perfect Slot Worksheet: Partner comparison
Schedule Fixer Worksheet: Rescheduling dilemmas
Roleplay Cards: Scaffolded real-world situations
Lesson Phase Breakdown (0 - 25 Mins)
1. Warm-Up & Spark (10 Minutes)
Slide 1
Begin with a visual puzzle. Display Slide 1 containing a chaotic calendar. Ask students: "Have you ever tried to meet a friend but spent days texting back and forth to find a time?" Connect this to the physical reality of analog time and calendar scheduling.
2. Presentation & Dialogue Breakdown (15 Minutes)
Slides 2-5
Introduce key functional structures. Group phrases into four target functions: Suggesting & Initiating , Acceptance & Agreeing , Confirmation , and Apologizing & Rescheduling . Model the dialogue with Sarah and Ahmed. Focus on realistic intonation for apologies.

Activities & Execution
3. Guided Practice: Perfect Slot Matching (15 Minutes)
Handout 1
Divide the class into pairs. Hand out Page 1 of the Perfect Slot Worksheet to Partner A and Page 2 to Partner B. Instruct students not to look at each other's sheets . Using only English questions and times, they must find exactly three open slots where they are both free. They will translate time from analog clocks to confirm details.
Teacher Tip: Watch for students peaking at their partner's sheets. Encourage them to use "Are you free at...?" and describe clock face hands if they get confused with time conversion.
4. Application: Schedule Fixer Dilemmas (10 Minutes)
Handout 2
Students work independently on the Schedule Fixer Worksheet . They are presented with a pre-booked calendar that contains three double-bookings. They must write formal and informal dialogues rescheduling the conflicting appointments using polite apology markers.
5. Roleplay & Wrap-Up (10 Minutes)
Handout 3
Distribute the Roleplay Cards . Students act out sudden plan disruptions. One partner has to change a plan at the last second, and the other must coordinate a new slot. End class with a group reflection on the most polite way to say "no".
Differentiation & Support
Scaffolding (Support)
Write dialogue sentence starters on the board. Allow students to use digital clocks on their sheets instead of writing out analog hands.
Extensions (Challenge)
Introduce time zones or multiple scheduling changes (e.g. "I can't make 3 PM either because of soccer practice, what about 5 PM?").
