Golden Rule of German Sentences
The V2 Rule Masterclass
Why the conjugated verb never moves from Position 2 in a German main clause.
Locked Verb Slot
Subject Inversion
Position vs Word Count
Core Principle: The Golden Second Slot
Standard Order
Position 1
Subject
The actor / person doing the action
Ich
Fixed Anchor
Position 2
Conjugated Verb
Matches subject ending
lerne
Position 3+
Rest of Sentence
Time, objects, details
heute Deutsch.
Full Sentence: Ich lerne heute Deutsch. (I am learning German today.)
Inversion: Starting with Time or Place
Crucial Shift
If you start a sentence with Time (e.g., Heute), the verb MUST stay in Position 2. The subject jumps right behind it!
Position 1
Heute
Time Element
Position 2 (STILL!)
lerne
Conjugated Verb
Position 3
ich
Inverted Subject
Position 4
Deutsch.
Object
Common English Trap:
English says: "Today I learn..." → German NEVER allows Heute ich lerne. Always say Heute lerne ich!
Pro Tip: "Position" ≠ "One Word"
Key Distinction
Position 1 is an entire chunk/idea, not necessarily a single word:
1 Chunk = Pos 1 [Am Montag]
Pos 2 spiele
ich Fußball.
1 Chunk = Pos 1 [Meine beste Freundin]
Pos 2 wohnt
in Berlin.
Count complete grammatical chunks (noun phrases, prepositional phrases), not individual word spaces!

Hook & V2 Concept Reveal (Slides 1–2):
Introduce the German "Golden Slot" concept. Contrast English flexibility with the strict lock on Verb Position 2 in German main clauses.
08–20 min
Inversion Mechanics & Multi-Word Chunks (Slides 3–5):

Guided & Individual Worksheet Practice (Parts A–D):
Students complete slot identification and the Inversion Machine. Circulate to ensure students don't write English-style *Heute ich spiele .

Sentence Forge & Peer Validation (Part E & Exit Check):

!
Key Misconceptions & Coaching Prompts
⚠️ English Word Order Transfer:
Students naturally say *"Morgen ich spiele"* because English allows *"Tomorrow I play"*. Coaching Prompt: "Ask: Where is your verb? If it's 3rd, pull it immediately back to slot 2!"
💡 Counting Words vs. Chunks:
Students think *"Am Montag"* is 2 positions. Coaching Prompt: "Put brackets around the whole thought: [Am Montag] counts as ONE ticket into position 1."

Mastering TeKaMoLo Order
How German arranges Time, Manner, and Place in perfect harmony.
Te = Temporal (When?)
Mo = Modal (How?)
Lo = Lokal (Where?)
The TeKaMoLo Lineup for Beginners
Natural Sequence
1. Te Wann?
Time (Temporal)
When does it happen?
heute, am Montag, um 8 Uhr, immer
2. Mo Wie?
Manner (Modal)
How or with whom?
mit dem Bus, gern, mit Freunden, schnell
3. Lo Wo / Wohin?
Place (Lokal)
Where or to where?
nach Hause, in die Schule, im Park
Note for Beginners: Ka (Kausal = Why? ) comes after Time, but in Year 1 we focus heavily on Time → Manner → Place !
Assembling the Full Sentence
Step-by-Step
English sentence: "I travel to school by bike every morning."
Subject Ich
Verb (Pos 2) fahre
Time (Te) jeden Tag
Manner (Mo) mit dem Rad
Place (Lo) zur Schule.
Rule Reminder: The Verb (fahre) is still in Position 2, followed by Time → Manner → Place.
Result: Ich fahre jeden Tag mit dem Rad zur Schule.
German vs. English Word Order Trap
Major Pitfall
English Default Order
Place → Manner → Time
"We go [to Munich] [by train] [on Friday]."
⚠️ Translating word-for-word creates incorrect German!
German Te-Mo-Lo Order
Time → Manner → Place
"Wir fahren [am Freitag] [mit dem Zug] [nach München]."
✅ Time always comes first among adverbials!
Remember: Wann? (When) comes before Wie? (How), which comes before Wo? (Where)!
Quick Check: Which Sentence is Perfect?
Challenge
A Er geht ins Kino heute Abend mit Freunden.
❌ Place first!
B Er geht heute Abend mit Freunden ins Kino.
✅ Te → Mo → Lo!
