Mission Objective
The goal of this mission is to help "Recruit Detectives" (students) achieve automaticity with the Dolch 3rd Grade Sight Word list. By using visual cues and context, recruits will build the fluency needed for advanced reading assignments.
The Equipment
Sight Word Dossiers: Flashcards featuring the target word and a visual 'clue' (emoji support). Each card is designed to look like a confidential file piece. Use these to train recognition speed.
Training Protocols

The Visual Scan
Show the recruit the card. Have them look at the "Clue" (picture) and try to deduce the word before reading the text. This builds semantic association and context-based guessing skills.

Evidence Building
Once the word is read, the recruit must use it in a "Witness Statement" (a sentence). For example: "I draw a picture of the suspect." This reinforces usage.

Speed Rounds
Flash the cards rapidly. Recruits must identify the word within 3 seconds to prove their 'Observation Skills' are up to agency standards for automaticity.
Field Exercises (Games)
Undercover Words
Hide the cards around the room. Detectives must find them and read them aloud to "check them in" at headquarters (the teacher's desk).
The Great Swap
In pairs, detectives trade cards. If a detective can read their partner's card accurately, they "win" that piece of evidence for their folder.
Clue Matcher
Lay out several cards. Give a clue based only on the picture (e.g., "I see something you use for writing") and have them find the matching card.

Shuffle the Sight Word Dossiers . Do a lightning round. Agents must call out the word as soon as the card is flashed. If they hesitate, use the "Visual Clue" (emoji) to prompt them immediately.

The Witness Statement (Core Activity)
Each agent selects 3 cards from the deck. They must "interview" their partner, showing them a card and asking: "Agent, what evidence do you have for this word?" The partner must use the word in a sentence to prove they understand the case.
10-15 MIN
Mission Log Entry (Closure)
Agents choose their "favorite" word of the session and record it in one slot of their Mission Evidence Log . The teacher provides the "HQ Authorization Stamp" (a sticker or signature) upon completion.
For Advanced Agents
Have agents create a "Double Clue." They must use two sight words from the dossiers in a single Witness Statement.
Example: "I shall bring the evidence to HQ."
Support Strategies
Focus heavily on the Visual Clues. Cover the word and have the agent identify the picture first, then reveal the word letter-by-letter to build phonics connection alongside sight recognition.
