Informational Text: The Busy Beaver
Habitat & Animal Traits
Beavers are extraordinary animals with special physical traits that allow them to transform their environment. They have powerful jaws and razor-sharp orange teeth that never stop growing. Using these natural tools, beavers can quickly gnaw through thick tree trunks, gathering heavy logs, leafy branches, and sticky river mud to construct watertight dams across rushing forest streams.
These wooden dams hold back rushing water, transforming shallow creeks into deep, quiet ponds. In the center of each pond, beaver families construct a dome-shaped home called a lodge. Inside, the lodge features a dry, cozy living room lined with soft wood shavings, while underwater entrance tunnels keep hungry predators like wolves, coyotes, and bears safely locked outside.
By building ponds, beavers do something truly amazing for nature. The calm, clean water creates a rich wetland sanctuary that provides food, drinking water, and shelter for countless living things, including trout, frogs, wood ducks, and painted turtles. Because their hard work sustains hundreds of other species, scientists call beavers nature's greatest engineers!
