Field Guide: How To Read The Grid
Periods (Rows)
Horizontal rows going left to right. Atomic numbers increase one-by-one across each row!
Groups (Columns)
Vertical columns going down. Elements in the same group share chemical behaviors and traits!
Elemental Zones
Metals live on the left and center. Nonmetals live on the right. Noble gases stand guard at the far right!
The Mini Periodic Grid Board
Match tiles from Page 2 into each designated coordinate slot

Scientist Action Checklist
- Inspect the 10 Element Dossier Tiles on Page 2. Examine each element's atomic number, family, state of matter, and clue.
- Cut or Transcribe: Carefully cut out the 10 tiles along the dashed lines (or copy their chemical symbol and atomic number) into the matching slots on this board.
- Verify the Laws: Confirm that numbers rise sequentially across each row, and family members stack together in matching columns!
- Complete the Lab Debrief on Page 2 to explain your scientific discoveries.
Evidence Locker: 10 Mystery Element Tiles
Cut & Paste or Reference Sheet
Each tile contains official atomic data. Match the clues to find each element's true address on the Page 1 grid!
1 Gas 💨
H
Hydrogen
The universe's lightest atom; powers stars and fizzes fiercely!
2 Gas 🎈
He
Helium
Lighter than air, never reacts or bonds with any other element.
3 Solid 🔋
Li
Lithium
Ultra-soft metal; powers rechargeable phone batteries!
4 Solid 💎
Be
Beryllium
Strong lightweight builder metal found inside green emeralds.
9 Gas 🪥
F
Fluorine
Super-reactive gas; tiny amounts shield teeth in toothpaste!
10 Gas 💡
Ne
Neon
Calm noble gas that blazes bright orange in city shop signs.
11 Solid 🧂
Na
Sodium
Fizzes with water; partners with Chlorine to make table salt!
12 Solid 🎆
Mg
Magnesium
Silvery metal that ignites with a blinding bright white spark!
17 Gas 🏊
Cl
Chlorine
Green-yellow gas used to clean pools and create table salt.
18 Gas 🛡️
Ar
Argon
The 'lazy' noble gas that protects hot filaments in light bulbs.
Lab Report: Pattern Discovery & Analysis
1. Row Pattern (Periods): Look across Period 2 (Li #3, Be #4, F #9, Ne #10). What happens to the atomic numbers as you move left to right? What does this tell you about how the table is organized?
2. Column Family Pattern (Groups): Compare Helium (He), Neon (Ne), and Argon (Ar) in Group 18. What physical state and behavior do all three share? Why are they called a "family"?
3. Mystery Prediction Challenge: A chemist discovers Potassium (K, Atomic #19). It is a shiny, soft metal that explodes violently in water. Which group (column) must it belong to, and which period (row) would it start?
