Instructional Flow
The Hook: The Sweet Cracker (10 mins)
Conduct the 60-second cracker challenge. For Level 1 learners, use the Stomach Starter (Mod) to guide their observations. Explicitly use the term "Chemical Scissors" when the cracker starts to taste sweet to introduce enzymes.
Visual Mini-Lesson (20 mins)
Use the Digestion Discovery Slides (Mod). Focus on the "Blender vs. Chemical" analogy for mechanical vs. chemical digestion. Have students complete the Gut Tour Notes (Mod) using the provided word bank during the slides.
Hands-On Activity: Enzyme Puzzle (20 mins)
Instead of a complex matching task, provide students with physical cut-outs of different shapes (circle, square, star). Ask them to match "enzymes" (shapes with cut-outs) to "substrates" (the shapes). This tactile activity reinforces specificity before they move to the Enzyme Basics Worksheet (Mod).
Check for Understanding (15 mins)
End with the Digestive Debrief (Mod). If time permits, do a "Path Sprint" where students move to different corners of the room labeled "Mouth," "Stomach," and "Intestine" based on where you say a certain nutrient is broken down.
Modification Focus Points
Vocabulary Reduction
Avoid heavy use of "alimentary canal," "peristalsis," or "chyme" unless students are ready. Stick to "Food Path," "Muscle Waves," and "Mashed Food."
