The Rescue on Willow Creek
By Elena Morales
¶1
A chilly October drizzle tapped against Leo's yellow raincoat as he walked home from school. Suddenly, a faint whimper echoed from the deep drainage ditch behind Miller's Hardware. Leo froze mid-step, his stomach twisting into a tight knot. What if an animal is trapped down there? he thought, his pulse hammering against his ribs. He felt a sharp surge of fear about the rushing stormwater, but he refused to turn away.
¶2
"Hello? Hang on, I hear you!" Leo called out, cupping his cold hands around his mouth so his voice carried over the rushing water. "Don't be scared!" Peering through the slippery cattails, he spotted a golden retriever puppy clinging to a crumbling mud ledge just inches above the foaming ditch.
¶3
Leo took a slow, deep breath to steady his trembling fingers. Panicking will only waste precious time, he told himself. Think, Leo. Use whatever is around you. He remembered the thick canvas tow strap sitting in his grandfather's wheelbarrow across the alley. Without hesitating, Leo dashed through the wet gravel, seized the sturdy strap, and hurried back to the ditch edge.
¶4
"Stay completely still, little buddy," Leo whispered gently, softening his voice so he wouldn't startle the shivering creature. "I've got you." He knelt directly in the muddy grass, ignoring the icy rainwater soaking through his jeans. Patiently, he fashioned a wide, secure loop and lowered it toward the stranded puppy.
¶5
With slow, deliberate tugs, Leo coaxed the loop under the puppy's front legs and hoisted the dog onto solid ground. The wet bundle immediately shook water everywhere and planted two joyful muddy paws on Leo's chest. Leo exhaled a giant sigh of relief, smiling broadly as he wrapped his own warm fleece jacket around the shivering stray. "You're safe now," he murmured proudly. "Let's get you indoors."
Look closely at Leo's choices, feelings, and words. Continue to Page 2 →
