Passage 1: Ranger Kai’s Mountain Patrol
Teacher Note: Prompt students to listen for transition words that reveal time of day (at dawn, by midday, in the evening).
Paragraph 1: Ranger Kai is a mountain wildlife ranger who protects the alpine grizzly sanctuary. Every morning at dawn, Kai begins his day by tuning into the weather broadcast and checking his rugged radio gear. Immediately after sunrise, he feeds his search-and-rescue shepherd dog, Jax, and laces up his hiking boots to inspect the base camp boundary trail.
Paragraph 2: By midday, Kai hikes to the upper ridge overlook. During this time, he uses high-powered binoculars to count bighorn sheep and records their GPS locations into his tablet. While eating a quick sandwich on the ridge, he occasionally spots a golden eagle circling overhead.
Paragraph 3: Late in the afternoon, Kai returns to the visitor trail to check trail cameras and replace memory cards. Finally, as darkness falls, Kai locks the supply shed, logs his wildlife counts into the national park database, and prepares his emergency gear for the next day.
Key Time Signals to Highlight: Every morning at dawn, immediately after sunrise, by midday, late in the afternoon, finally as darkness falls.
Minor / Non-routine Detail: Eating a quick sandwich; spotting a golden eagle overhead (one-off event, not his core duty).

Passage 2: Dr. Nia’s Coral Reef Research Routine
Prompt: Students will independently record routine details on their worksheet, filter out extra trivia, and write a summary paragraph.
Paragraph 1: Dr. Nia is a marine biologist who lives aboard the research vessel *Coral Star*. Each morning at 6:00 AM, Dr. Nia starts her routine by calibrating the water temperature sensors and checking scuba dive tanks. Before breakfast, she holds a safety briefing with her research crew to review the day's dive coordinates.
Paragraph 2: Around 10:00 AM, Dr. Nia gears up and dives into the shallow reef. Her main task during morning dives is photographing tagged coral colonies and testing water salinity. One morning last month, a playful sea turtle bumped into her camera lens, which made the whole crew laugh.
Paragraph 3: After lunch, Dr. Nia spends the afternoon in the boat’s wet lab examining coral polyps under a microscope. Before dinner, she enters the water chemistry data into the marine database. Finally, before going to sleep, Dr. Nia charges all underwater dive lights so everything is ready for the morning.
Exemplar Student Summary (4/4)
"Dr. Nia is a marine biologist who follows a busy daily routine aboard a research ship. In the morning, she calibrates sensors, inspects dive equipment, and dives to photograph coral colonies. During the afternoon, she tests water samples in the wet lab and enters data into a computer. Finally, she charges her gear at night to prepare for the next day."
✓ Captures subject, sequence (morning, afternoon, night), and key tasks while omitting the playful turtle incident.
Summary Scoring Rubric
4
Mastery: States role, sequences 3+ key routine events in order, includes transitions, omits minor trivia.
3
Proficient: Identifies subject and most routine events; may include 1 minor detail or miss 1 transition.
2
Approaching: Out of chronological order, or confuses the one-off turtle story for a daily routine.
1
Novice: Incomplete; lists random words without summarizing the daily routine.
Differentiation & Scaffolding Strategies
Support (ELL / IEP)
Provide the sentence starter frame: "Dr. Nia’s routine begins when... Then in the afternoon she... Finally, her day ends with..." Read the passage 3 times.
Common Misconception
Students often summarize the *turtle event* because it was funny. Remind them: "Does this happen EVERY day, or was it just one special day?"
Extension Challenge
Have advanced students write an interview dialogue between Dr. Nia and a reporter highlighting why following this strict routine keeps her safe at sea.

Concept Check
Daily Routine
Actions that happen regularly every day
"Every morning at sunrise, Ranger Kai checks his emergency radio and feeds his rescue dog Jax."
✓ KEEP THIS in your summary!
One-Time Incident
A funny or unexpected moment that happened once
"While eating a sandwich, Kai saw a golden eagle circle the peak."
✗ LEAVE THIS OUT of your summary!
Summaries focus on the regular pattern of the day, not random single moments.
Detective Ears: Listen for Time Signals
Signal Words
Authors use transition words to signal when an action takes place during the day:
Morning / Start
• At dawn / sunrise
• Early in the morning
• To start the day
• Before breakfast
Midday / Afternoon
• By midday / at noon
• During the afternoon
• Next / After lunch
• Later that day
Evening / Close
• As the sun sets
• Late in the afternoon
• Before bed
• Finally / At night
When your ears catch these words, you know a new routine step is coming!
The 3-Sentence Summary Formula
Writing Frame
1
Sentence 1: The Who & The Job
Introduce the person, their career, and where their daily routine takes place.
2
Sentence 2: Morning & Afternoon Routine
Use time transition words to explain their main daytime tasks and responsibilities.
