01
Jess and Will stepped off the dusty path and pushed past the tall, wet grass. A stiff chill blew off the rock cliff, making Jess pull up her cuff. The two friends had made a pact not to miss their chance to reach the top of the bluff before dusk. Jess stopped to take a quick sniff of the pine needles as they marched up the steep hill.
02
At the ridge, they found an ancient stone wall draped in thick, green moss. Without warning, a sharp buzz cut through the still air, followed by a faint hiss. Will froze in his tracks. Did a snake lurk in the grass, or was that the buzz of wild bees? Jess told Will not to fuss or yell. She pointed toward a deep crack in the stone.
03
Beneath a soft patch of yellow fuzz, something metallic caught the light. Will cleared the dirt with a sturdy drill stick. With a sudden thrill, they pulled out a heavy brass bell attached to a brass chain. The mystery of the bluff was solved, and the climb was worth every bit of the test!
