Case Briefing
In this lesson, students step into the role of Venture Detectives. Instead of just learning business definitions, they analyze the living anatomy of local enterprises. By investigating a local business's origins, revenue streams, and growth strategies, students demystify entrepreneurship and map out concrete patterns of business success.
Mission Objectives
- • Deconstruct a local business's primary and secondary revenue models.
- • Map the origin story and core customer demographic.
- • Formulate growth recommendations based on market findings.
Investigation Timeline
10 Mins
Phase 1: Hook — The Mystery Startup
Show students a photograph of a highly successful local storefront without its logo or name. Ask: "How does this place pay its rent? What was their very first sale? What problem did they solve?" Frame the detective metaphor: businesses are puzzles waiting to be solved.
15 Mins
Phase 2: Briefing the Detectives
Distribute the Business Blueprint Organizer. Introduce the 3 pillars of business analysis: Origins (The Spark), Mechanics (Value & Revenue), and Growth (Future Outlook). Work through a model business (e.g., a local bakery) as a whole-class practice round.
30 Mins
Phase 3: Active Field Research
Students choose or are assigned a local business (e.g., a local coffee shop, family-owned hardware store, local independent bookstore). Using school-safe devices, business websites, social media profiles, or local news articles, they conduct digital "surveillance" to fill in their case file.

Phase 4: Case Debrief & Peer Share
Pair students up as "investigative partners" to swap files. Partners must identify: What is the most unique revenue stream in your partner's business? and Where do they differ in who they target? Bring the class back together to map common local business traits on the board.
5 Mins
Phase 5: Case Closed Exit Ticket
Have students write down one major economic challenge facing their chosen business today (e.g., supply cost, hiring, online competition) and one potential solution.
Crucial Interrogation Prompts
1. On Revenue:
"If this business had zero walk-in retail customers for a week, how could they still generate sales? Do they sell online, host events, or license products?"
2. On Growth & Scarcity:
"Why hasn't this local business opened 50 locations across the state? What unique constraints (labor, brand, supply) keep them local?"
Scaffolded Clues (Support)
- • Pre-select 3 local businesses with highly transparent websites or extensive local press.
- • Focus student research on mapping exactly 1 primary revenue stream rather than multiple streams.
- • Provide visual prompts (e.g., logo matching) for local storefronts.
Elite Missions (Extension)
- • Ask students to calculate estimated gross profit margins based on standard industry averages.
- • Have students research and map out a direct digital competitor (e.g., local bakery vs. direct-to-consumer online cookie brand).
- • Draft a mini-marketing proposal for the business.
