Watch closely for the "Soup" and "Jacket" parts!
Where does the heat go?
Just like hot soup, our bodies give off heat all the time.
If we aren't careful, the heat escapes into the cold air!
The Heat Arrows
No Coat = Heat escapes!
Coat = Heat is trapped!
Time to Dress the Bear!
We are going to give our bear layers of clothes to trap the heat arrows inside.

Learning Objective
Students will understand that clothing does not *make* us warm, but rather traps the heat our bodies already produce to keep us cozy.
Materials Needed
- Thermos (Warm water)
- Regular Cup (Warm water)
- Bear Worksheets
- Scissors & Glue
- Orange Crayons/Markers
Total Time
30 MIN
1
The Hook: The Water Test (5 min)
Set out a Thermos and an Open Cup with warm water at the start of the day (or lesson).
"Class, one of these drinks is wearing a 'heavy coat' (the thermos) and the other is just in a 't-shirt' (the cup). Which one will stay warm? Let's feel them!"
Have a few students safely touch the outside of the containers.
2
Video: Why Do We Shiver? (5 min)
Show the SciShow Kids video. Pause at 1:05 to discuss the Soup Analogy.
Key Question:
"Where does the steam go? Does the soup stay hot forever?"
Concept Connection:
Explain that we are like the soup! We have heat inside us.
3
Activity: Dress the Bear (15 min)
Distribute the Dress the Bear activity sheets.
Step 1: Have students draw "Heat Arrows" (orange squiggles) pointing away from the bear's bare body. This shows the heat escaping into the air.
Step 2: Cut and color the winter clothes. Encourage them to use many colors!
Step 3: Glue the clothes directly over the heat arrows. Explain: "Now the arrows are stuck between the bear and the coat! They are trapped!"
4
Closure: Circle Time (5 min)
"If we want to stay warm, we need to be a 'Thermos' for our bodies. What is one item of clothing you use to trap your heat?"
Scarf Hat Mittens Snow Pants
Extension
Ask: "What about a blanket? Is a blanket the same as a coat? Why?" Connect it to sleeping in a cold room.
Misconception
Watch out for students saying "The coat is hot." Remind them the coat is cold in the closet; *we* are the ones who are hot!
"Shivering is a reflex—something our bodies do without us having to think about it." - Jessi, SciShow Kids
