Burp Scouts Teacher Guide The Great Burp Quest
Teacher Lesson Guide & Facilitation Notes
Grade 2 • Science
Learning Objective
Students will be able to map the path of digestion (mouth → esophagus → stomach) and identify three major sources of gas that cause burping.
Duration
45 MIN
Essential Supplies
Large rolls of butcher paper
Colorful markers (green for gas!)
Burp Scouts Presentation Slides
Digestive System Diagram Handouts
Gas Makers Reflection Sheet
Scissors (optional for cut-outs)
Instructional Steps
1
Warm-Up: The Invisible Gum (5 min)
Have students sit in a circle. Ask them to "unwrap" a piece of pretend gum and chew. Discussion Prompt: "What happens if you accidentally swallow this? Where does it go first? Where does it end up?" Have students trace the path from their mouths down their chests with a finger.
2
Video Discovery (5 min)
Watch "Why Do We Burp?" Focus on the diagram at 0:58. Use these pause points:
1:07: Trace the path on your body as Jessi labels them.
1:24: How is a stomach like a backpack? (It stretches!)
2:22: Which foods make our tummies extra bubbly?
3
Main Activity: The Digestive Map (20 min)
In pairs, students lay butcher paper on the floor. One student traces their partner. Task: Use the reference sheet to draw and label: Mouth, Esophagus, and Stomach. The "Gas Check": Draw green gas bubbles in the stomach and a big arrow showing them escaping UP through the esophagus.
4
Reflection & Labels (10 min)
Students use the "Gas Makers" sheet or write directly on their posters: Identify 3 things that cause gas (Soda, Straws, Beans/Broccoli). Review the "Backpack Analogy"—why does the gas have to leave? (To make room!)
5
Gallery Walk (5 min)
Tape the life-size posters to the walls. Students walk around with "stickers" or just observe how other groups mapped the path. Encourage them to say "Excuse me!" if they pass another explorer.
Misconception Alert
Students often think burping only happens from soda. Remind them that we swallow air between 6 and 20 times a day just by eating, talking, or yawning! Burping is a normal body cleanup process.

The Backpack Trick
Your stomach is like a backpack. It can stretch when you put food in it. But what happens if it gets too crowded?
"Something's gotta go!"

GAS UP!
Your Mission
Use this map to help you draw on your butcher paper! Make sure you follow these steps:
1 Trace your partner's whole body first.
2 Draw the Mouth at the top.
3 Connect the Esophagus tube down to the belly.
4 Draw the big Stomach pouch.
5 Color in green gas bubbles and a big "Excuse Me" arrow going UP!
Scout Hint
Remember: Your stomach is like a backpack! If you put too much gas or air in it, the gas has to find a way out so you don't feel "overstuffed."
