Paragraph 1 The Catastrophe
In 1911, a massive earthquake shook the Tian Shan mountains. The violent tremor triggered a gigantic limestone landslide that tumbled into a deep gorge, creating an enormous natural dam that blocked the rushing river.

Freezing glacial rainwater soon filled the blocked canyon, forming Lake Kaindy. The rising water gradually submerged a majestic forest of tall Schrenk spruce trees that grew along the valley floor.

¶ 1 In 1911, a powerful earthquake shook the Tian Shan mountains. The violent tremor triggered a massive limestone landslide that crashed into a deep gorge, creating a towering natural dam that completely blocked the river.
¶ 2 Freezing glacial runoff steadily filled the blocked gorge, creating Lake Kaindy. The rising water gradually submerged a grand forest of tall spruce trees.
¶ 3 Today, bare gray trunks poke out of the water like ghost ship masts. Yet beneath the icy surface, the water never gets warmer than 43°F (6°C). Because of the extreme cold, the drowned pine needles and branches are preserved, looking as fresh as the day the forest drowned!
