Use this rubric to assess individual 1st grade students during oral retelling of any familiar 3-step routine. Focus on temporal word accuracy and full-sentence oral structure.
Domain 1 - Emerging 2 - Developing 3 - Proficient Star Temporal Words Omits words or needs prompt: requires teacher to feed "First", "Next", or "Last". Uses 2 of the 3 target words independently; may confuse order without visual mat. Consistently and accurately incorporates "First," "Next," and "Last" in chronological sequence. Sentence Structure Produces single words or isolated verbs (e.g., "Soap. Water. Towel."). Produces partial phrases with occasional whole sentence support. Produces complete spoken sentences for all 3 steps (e.g., "First, I pump soap on my hands."). Order & Logic Events described out of chronological sequence; misses cause-and-effect. Correct sequence when assisted by visual cards; self-corrects minor steps. Explains logical progression fluently; clearly differentiates start, middle, and end.
