No equals sign needed to simplify

ACTION 3

Isolate

Getting the variable all by itself on one side using inverse operations.

\(x + 5 = 12 \rightarrow x = 7\)

Solves for the unknown value

First distribute to remove parentheses • Next simplify like terms • Then isolate the variable!

Math Language & Precision

"Simplify" vs. "Solve"

SIMPLIFY

Expressions (No "=")

Goal: Condense or rewrite into simplest form. You do not find an unknown value.

1. Multiplying Fractions:

\(\frac{4}{9} \cdot \frac{3}{8} = \frac{12}{72} = \frac{1}{6}\)

Multiplied & reduced to lowest terms. No variable!

2. Algebraic Like Terms:

\(7x + 5 - 3x + 9 = 4x + 14\)

Combined like terms into shortest form. \(x\) is still unknown!

SOLVE

Equations (Has "=")

Goal: Find the exact numeric value that makes the equation true. Isolate the variable!

1. Fraction Equation:

\(\frac{3}{4}x = 12 \rightarrow x = 12 \cdot \frac{4}{3} \rightarrow x = 16\)

Used reciprocal to find the solution for \(x\)!

2. Algebraic Equation:

\(7x + 5 - 3x + 9 = 34 \rightarrow 4x + 14 = 34 \rightarrow x = 5\)

Simplified like terms first, then isolated \(x = 5\)!

Summary: If there is no equals sign, you simplify. If there is an equals sign, you solve!

Algebra Practice

Applying Distribute, Simplify, & Isolate

Question Slide

Examine this equation:

\(3(x - 4) + 2x = 28\)

Step 1: Distribute

What does \(3(x - 4)\) become when distributed?

Step 2: Simplify

Which like terms can be combined on the left side?

Step 3: Isolate

What inverse operations isolate the variable \(x\)?

Talk through each step before checking the answer. Next slide has the answer →

Algebra Practice Solution

Step-by-Step Breakdown

Answer Slide

Step 1: Distribute

Clear Parentheses

Multiply 3 by \(x\) and by \(-4\):

\(3x - 12 + 2x = 28\)

Step 2: Simplify

Combine Like Terms

Add \(3x\) and \(2x\) together:

\(5x - 12 = 28\)

Step 3: Isolate

Inverse Operations

Add 12, then divide by 5:

\(5x = 40 \rightarrow x = 8\)

The variable \(x\) is now isolated on the left side of the equals sign!

Context Clue Practice 1

Science Vocabulary: Sound Energy

Question Slide

Read the sentence closely:

"Unlike thermal energy that warms objects directly, sound energy travels as rapid mechanical vibrations passing through air, water, or solid objects."

Question A:

What clue signal word did the author use?

Question B:

Is this a Synonym, Contrast, or Causal clue?

What is the gleaned meaning based on this contrast? Next slide has the answer →

Context Clue Practice 1 Solution

Sound Energy: Breakdown

Answer Slide

Clue Signal Word

"Unlike..."

Alerts the reader to an opposite or contrasting form of energy.

Context Clue Type

Contrast / Antonym

Contrasts direct warmth with physical wave vibrations.

Gleaned Definition

Sound energy is energy carried by vibrating particles moving through matter like air, liquids, or solids.

Takeaway: Contrast clues explain a word by showing what it differs from.

Context Clue Practice 2

Science Vocabulary: Nuclear Energy

Question Slide

Read the sentence closely:

"Nuclear energy—that is, the immense power stored deep inside the nucleus of an atom—is released during reactions to produce electricity."

Question A:

What signal phrase renames the term?

Question B:

Which clue type is this (Synonym, Contrast, Causal)?

Look at what the punctuation sets off right after the term. Next slide has the answer →

Context Clue Practice 2 Solution

Nuclear Energy: Breakdown

Answer Slide

Clue Signal Words

"—that is, ..."

Dashes and that is introduce a direct synonym or explanation.

Context Clue Type

Synonym / Restatement

The definition is embedded directly within the sentence.

Gleaned Definition

Nuclear energy is the energy locked inside the nucleus (center) of an atom that can be released to create power.

Takeaway: Punctuation (commas, dashes, parentheses) frequently frames restatements.

Math Translation Practice

Verbal Clues into Algebraic Expressions

Question Slide

Translate this verbal math phrase:

"The product of 5 and a number \(x\), decreased by 12"

Question A:

What operation does product of signal?

Question B:

What operation does decreased by signal?

Question C:

Write the algebraic expression!

Notice the order of the terms: Does "decreased by" turn around? Next slide has the answer →

Math Translation Solution

Translation Breakdown & Result

Answer Slide

Clue Word 1

"Product of"

Signals Multiplication: \(5 \cdot x = 5x\)

Clue Word 2

"Decreased by"

Signals Subtraction in standard order: \(- 12\)

Correct Algebraic Expression \(5x - 12\)

Key Distinction:

"Decreased by" stays in order (\(5x - 12\)). Only "less than" reverses the order (\(12 - 5x\))!

Ready for independent practice: You have the anatomy, the action steps, and the context clues!
