Glowing in the Midnight Zone
How ocean animals use living light to hunt, hide, and survive.
Core Reading Text
Reading Goal: Underline sentences that explain why deep-sea animals make their own light to survive.
1. The Darkest Place on Earth
14710
Far down in the ocean, sunlight disappears. More than 3,000 feet down, you reach the "Midnight Zone." In this part of the sea, it is pitch black day and night. The water is ice-cold. Heavy water pressure pushes down hard. A human diver cannot see anything here. However, this deep water is not completely empty. If you shut off your submarine lights, you will see blue and green sparks glowing like fireflies in the dark water.
2. Animals That Make Living Light
13161923
Most creatures in the midnight zone can make their own light. Scientists call this bioluminescence . Think of it as "living light." Inside the animal's body, natural chemicals mix together with oxygen. This chemical mix makes a cool, glowing shine. It does not get hot like a lamp. Instead, it glows blue or green. Blue-green light is special because it cuts through dark seawater better than any other color.
3. Staying Alive in the Dark
2629
Why do deep-sea creatures glow? Making light takes extra energy. In the deep ocean, food is very hard to find. Danger is everywhere. Animals do not glow just to look pretty. They glow to catch dinner and to keep from being eaten by hunters.
Word Helper
Midnight Zone:
Deep ocean water with zero sunlight.
Bioluminescence:
(bye-oh-loo-mih-NES-ens)
Light made by a living creature.
Prey:
An animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal.
Fun Fact
Almost 9 out of 10 deep-sea animals can make light. It is their main way to communicate!

4. Living Flashlights: Hunting for Food
32364044
In total darkness, finding a meal is hard work. The female anglerfish solves this problem with a built-in fishing pole on her head. At the tip of the pole hangs a glowing pouch filled with light-making bacteria. In the dark, "hungry prey animals mistake the bright dancing bulb for an appetizing worm" (lines 39-40). When curious fish swim close to take a bite, the anglerfish snaps her sharp jaws shut fast. Other hunters, like lanternfish, use glowing spots on their bellies like flashlights to search the ocean floor.

Cite Evidence (C) Smooth lead-in stem, accurate quotes, and line reference included. Cites relevant quote with lead-in and quotation marks. Quote is dropped without lead-in or missing quotation marks. No direct quote from passage; only vague retelling. Annotated Mentor Exemplar Paragraph
Score: 16/16 (Level 4)
In the deep ocean, bioluminescence is essential for survival because it allows predators to lure prey and enables defenseless animals to hide from attackers. According to the informational text, "hungry prey animals mistake the bright dancing bulb for an appetizing worm" (lines 39-40). This demonstrates that without living lanterns, deep-sea hunters would starve in the pitch-black midnight zone where food is scarce. Clearly, bioluminescence provides oceanic creatures with the vital tools necessary to hunt, protect themselves, and thrive in an extreme ecosystem.
