The Heat Beneath Our Feet
Deep inside the Earth, temperatures can soar to over 6,000° Celsius—as hot as the surface of the Sun. This intense heat, called geothermal energy, is produced by the decay of radioactive particles and the original heat left over from when the planet formed.
While most of this heat is trapped miles below the surface, some of it escapes through volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers. Geothermal power plants tap into this underground reservoir of heat by drilling deep wells—sometimes over a mile down—to bring hot water or steam to the surface.

From Steam to Sparks
The main goal of a geothermal power plant is to use Earth's heat to spin a turbine. A turbine is like a giant fan connected to a generator. When the turbine spins, it creates a magnetic field that produces electricity. There are three main ways scientists do this:
1. Dry Steam Power Plants
The simplest and oldest design. It uses steam that comes directly out of the ground through a well. The steam travels through pipes directly into the turbine, spinning it. This was first used in Larderello, Italy, in 1904!
2. Flash Steam Power Plants
These plants pull high-pressure hot water from deep underground (at temperatures over 180°C). As the water moves into a low-pressure tank, it "flashes" into steam instantly. This steam then drives the turbine.
3. Binary Cycle Power Plants
Used for lower-temperature water. The hot water heats a second liquid (a "binary fluid") that boils at a much lower temperature than water. This second liquid turns into steam, spins the turbine, and is then recycled.
The Sustainable Loop
After the steam has spun the turbine, it is sent to a Cooling Tower. Here, the steam is cooled back down into liquid water.
This cooled water is then injected back into the reservoir through an Injection Well. This is a critical step—it replenishes the water supply and maintains pressure in the underground reservoir, ensuring the power plant can keep running for decades.

The "Secret Ingredient":
A second fluid (like isobutane) that boils at a lower temperature than water.
Hot Earth water heats the second fluid. The second fluid turns to steam!
