Lesson: Kitchen Chemistry Reactions
Learning Objective
Students will define a reaction as mixing two things to create a third thing and observe how gas bubbles take up space in liquids and solids.
Materials Needed
- Clear plastic cup
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Straw and cup of water (Warm-up)
- Student Reflection Journals
Lesson Timeline
5 min
Warm-up: Bubble Mystery
Instruction: Blow bubbles into a cup of water using a straw.
Ask the Class:
"What is inside these bubbles? How did they get there?"

Video: Why Does Cheese Have Holes?
Show the SciShow Kids video. Pause at 2:10.
Discussion Prompt:
"Jessi says a reaction is when two things mix and make a third thing. In Swiss cheese, what are the two things mixing? (Bacteria + Milk). What is the third thing? (Gas Bubbles!)"
20 min
Activity: Kitchen Chemistry Demo
Teacher performs the demo while students observe and record in journals.
- Before: Show the vinegar (liquid) and baking soda (powder). Have students draw these on their "Before" page.
- The Reaction: Add 2 tbsp of baking soda to the cup, then pour in vinegar.
- Observe: Watch the fizzing bubbles. Remind students that these bubbles are Gas.
- After: Students draw the "After" state, making sure to label the bubbles as Gas.
5 min
Closure: Turn and Talk
"How is our vinegar experiment like what happens inside Swiss cheese?"
Key take-away: Both use a reaction to make gas bubbles that take up space!
