Atmospheric Cooling and Condensation
As the warm water vapor ascends higher into the atmosphere, it encounters much lower temperatures. The cold temperatures cause the gaseous water molecules to release heat and slow down. As a result, the vapor shifts back into microscopic droplets of liquid water. These suspended droplets merge around air dust particles to create visible clouds, a transition called condensation.
The Role of Gravity in Precipitation
Within the clouds, these liquid droplets continue to combine. As droplets expand, they become too heavy to remain suspended in the air. Gravity subsequently pulls them downward toward Earth's surface. Depending on atmospheric temperatures, this precipitation falls in various states: rain (liquid), snow (solid crystals), sleet (partially frozen), or hail (frozen layers).
Surface Runoff and Collection
Once precipitation strikes the ground, it travels as runoff across mountains and landscapes, finding its way into rivers, streams, and soil. Ultimately, gravity deposits this water back into major bodies of water in a step called collection. This storage cycle ensures water is ready to absorb solar energy once more, keeping the loop endless.
