Brain Builders
Grade 2 Science & Mindset
Your Brain is like a Muscle!
Discover the tiny power-connectors in your head and find out how practicing makes you smarter every single day!
Today's Mission: Build, Connect, and Grow!
Let's Start!
01. Inside Your Head Brain Builders
Meet the Neuron!
Your brain is made of billions of tiny helpers called neurons. They send secret messages to help you think, run, and learn!
1
Soma (Body): The main control center of the cell.
2
Dendrites (Catchers): Tiny branches that catch incoming messages.
3
Axon (Sender): The long tail that shoots messages out to others.

Neurons link arm-to-arm like a giant human chain!
Your brain has over 86 billion neurons!

02. Making Connections Brain Builders
Neuron A (Sender)
Neuron B (Receiver)
This gap is called a SYNAPSE!
Messages leap across like tiny electrical sparks.
ZAP! How You Learn
Every time you learn a new spelling word, try a math problem, or play a new game, your neurons fire a tiny electric zap to pass information.
The Secret of Learning:
At first, the spark has to work hard to cross. But when you practice, the path gets stronger and faster!
Practice makes the connection path smooth and lightning fast!

03. Pipe Cleaner Neurons Brain Builders
Let's Build a Neuron!
We will use colorful pipe cleaners to build our own 3D neuron model. Grab your supplies!
1
The Soma
Roll one colored pipe cleaner into a tight ball. This is your neuron body!
2
The Dendrites
Wrap two short pieces around your ball. Twirl and bend them like wild branches!
3
The Axon
Attach one long pipe cleaner to the ball. Pull it out straight so it looks like a long tail!
4
The Terminals
Add small beads or curly twists to the end of the tail. Ready to send messages!
Be creative! Choose different colors for each part of your neuron.

04. Growing Stronger Brain Builders
What is Neuroplasticity?
That's a giant word! Let's break it down:
Neuro = Brain Cells (Neurons)
Plasticity = Moldable / Stretchy like playdough!
It means your brain is NOT fixed. It physically changes shape, grows new branches, and gets thicker every time you practice!
Building the "Super-Highway"
First Try (Bumpy Dirt Road)
The connection is slow, weak, and hard to travel.
With Practice (The Super-Highway!)
A thick protective layer forms. The message travels lightning fast!
Struggling with a hard math puzzle means you are building your highway!

05. Mindset Mission Brain Builders
Keep Gym-ing Your Brain!
Since the brain acts like a muscle, what happens when we avoid hard things? It stays the same!
What happens when we stretch our minds and try even when we make mistakes? It grows stronger!
Try Saying This Instead:
"This is hard, but I am building my neuron highway right now!"
Instead of saying...
"I'm not good at this."
Say this proudly...
"I am working my brain muscle!"

Craft Checklist
Check off each box as you build that part of your cell!
1. Roll the Soma
Squeeze 1 pipe cleaner into a tight round ball.
2. Wrap Dendrites
Twist 2 small branches into your soma ball.
3. Attach the Axon
Connect 1 long straight tail to the soma.
4. Axon Terminals
Thread a bead or fold little loop hands on the tail end.
What is my neuron doing?
When you practice something tricky, your neuron shoots electricity down its axon to touch another neuron's dendrite!
Practice grows the pathway!
My Neuron Portrait
Draw your completed pipe cleaner neuron below. Label the Soma, Dendrites, and Axon!
Use colors! Add labeling arrows!
Quick Think-Pair-Share Challenge!
1. Share your build:
"My neuron uses color for its signal catcher!"
2. Explain the muscle magic:
"When we keep practicing, the connection gets !"

How to Play:
Read each brainy statement below. Use your pencil to color in or circle either TRUE (yes!) or FALSE (no!) for each question.
Your brain can grow stronger and smarter when you practice hard things.
True
False
You are born with a fixed brain that can never change its shape.
True
False
A neuron is a tiny helper cell in your brain that carries electricity.
True
False
When learning is hard, it means you can never do it, so you should stop trying.
True
False
Making mistakes actually helps build your neuron connection highways!

Part 1: The Brain Muscle (0-5 Mins)
Teacher Script (Say):
"Class, raise your hand if you have ever tried to lift weights or done a push-up to build your arm muscles! Did you know you have another muscle right inside your head? Your brain isn't a real meat muscle, but it acts just like one! Every single time you practice something hard, you are exercising that brain muscle."
Teacher Action (Do):
Show Slide 1. Ask students to make a "bicep flex" with their arms, then point to their forehead. Point out that their brains grow stronger, not by eating protein, but by practicing tasks that stretch their thinking.
Part 2: Meet the Neurons (5-15 Mins)
Teacher Script (Say):
"Inside your brain live tiny, magical electricity-messengers called neurons. Can you say that word? NEURON! There are billions of them, and they act like a giant holding-hands chain. Let's look at Slide 2: They have a head called a Soma, catcher arms called Dendrites, and a long message tail called an Axon!"
Teacher Action (Do):
Transition to Slide 2 & 3. Model the physical parts of a neuron using your own body: your head is the soma, your fingers/hands are the dendrites, and your long arm is the axon. Have the whole class mimic the pose and call out the names.
Lesson: Brain is a Muscle • Step-by-Step Script Page 1 of 2
Part 3: Pipe Cleaner Neuron Build (15-22 Mins)
Teacher Script (Say):
"Now, we are going to become Brain Scientists and build a real 3D model of a neuron! Grab your pipe cleaners and follow the steps on Slide 4. Roll your cell body, twist your branches, and pull that long signal-sending tail straight out. Add your pony bead at the end of the tail—that's where the electricity fires!"
Troubleshooting & Facilitation Tips:
- Soma unwinding: Help students tuck the loose end of the first pipe cleaner securely into the center core of the ball.
