HOW ANSWERS FAIL
1. The "Vague-Out"
Using overly vague terms instead of specific biological vocab.
"It affects the cell." → "Does not name the organelle or the actual process disrupted."
2. The "Disconnected Leap"
Writing a true biological fact, but failing to connect it to the specific evidence in the prompt.
"Mitochondria make ATP. The plant died." → "No link between the herbicide and cellular energy."
3. The "Question Echo"
Just restating the question without introducing any new evidence or cellular reasoning.
"The population changed because the environment altered." → "Zero biology explained."
4. The "Lethal Misconception"
Confusing basic biology concepts like saying plants do cellular respiration instead of photosynthesis.
"Plants do not need oxygen because they make glucose." → "Instant exam casualty."

"Hurt" & "Stay Alive" are too vague: Regents requires precise biological terminology (e.g., cell respiration, ATP, metabolic functions).
"Make Energy" is scientifically incorrect: Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Mitochondria *release* chemical energy from glucose to form ATP molecules.
The Full Credit Restoration
Claim (Answer) Rotenone blocks mitochondria, causing cell death because the cell cannot generate enough usable energy to maintain its vital functions.
Evidence (The Link) The prompt states that rotenone inhibits key biochemical enzymes within the mitochondria.
Reasoning (Biology Principle) Mitochondria perform aerobic cellular respiration, which transfers stored chemical energy in glucose into ATP. Without active enzymes, ATP synthesis plummets, causing active transport and other life functions to fail.
Pro-Tip: Never write "make energy." Always write "synthesize/produce ATP" or "release chemical energy."
