If a student isolates sounds but cannot blend into the whole word, use continuous blending : sing the sounds elongated without stopping (/ssssuunnn/), then compress to normal speech speed.
Extension Challenge
Ask fast finishers: "What word do we get if we change the first sound of 'cap' /k/ to /m/?" (Map) This introduces phoneme substitution ahead of Day 2!

Day 1 Plan
Explicit Phonemic Awareness • 15–20 Minutes
15–20 Min
Whole & Small Group
Target Skill Objective:
Students will orally blend 2 to 3 individually spoken phonemes into recognized spoken CVC words with 80%+ accuracy without relying on print letters.
Materials Needed:
• Sound Blending Slides
• Sound Blend Hunt Activity Sheet
• Manipulatives: Sound chips/counters (3 per child)
PHASE 1: I DO (4 Min) The Mystery Sound Machine
Teacher Modeling
Teacher Script: "Detectives, today we are using our super sound ears! Words are built from separate sound blocks. Watch me: I hear /s/ ... /u/ ... /n/. When I slide my arm across (sweep left hand from shoulder to wrist), they snap together into... SUN! Let's try another: /m/ ... /a/ ... /p/... MAP! Blending turns secret sounds into real words!"
Physical Anchor: Tap left shoulder (sound 1), crook of elbow (sound 2), wrist (sound 3), then sweep down the entire arm while saying the whole word.
PHASE 2: WE DO (6 Min) Guided Slides & Choral Tapping
Choral Practice
Project Sound Blending Slides (Slides 3–7) . Tap the interactive sound buttons on screen while students tap their 3 fingers or counters on desks.
Step 1: Teacher gives sound: "Tap with me: /f/ ... /i/ ... /sh/."
Step 2: Sing it smoothly: "Sing the sounds close together: /fffff-iiiii-shhhhh/."
Step 3: Pop the word: "What's the mystery word?" Class responds in unison: "FISH!"
PHASE 3: YOU DO (7 Min) Sound Blend Hunt Application
Independent Check
Distribute Sound Blend Hunt Activity . Teacher orally speaks each word in disconnected phonemes using the prompt list from the Answer Key. Students independently touch each dot, blend mentally or in whispers, and circle the matching picture.
Quick Pacing Tip: Allow 25 seconds per item. Say sounds twice maximum to test auditory memory. 5 Items • 5 Points
What to Observe (Formative Check)
• Does the student wait for all sounds before guessing?
• Can they retain the initial sound after hearing the final sound?
• Are they adding extra vowel sounds (e.g. saying "puh" instead of clean /p/)?
