The Briefing (5 mins)
Introduce the detective theme. Use the slide deck to define Informational Text.
Key Question:
"What makes an informational text different from a fictional story?"

Guided Investigation (10 mins)
Pull up Card #1. Model the process of finding the main idea and highlighting evidence.
Step 1: Read the title and look for text features.Step 2: Skim the text to find what it's "mostly" about.Step 3: Eliminate distractors in the multiple-choice options.

Field Work (10 mins)
Students work through Task Cards #2-8. Ask students to point to evidence sentences.
Scaffolding Tip:
If struggling with Main Idea, ask them to title the paragraph in 3 words or less.

Complete the Exit Ticket independently. Collect and review against the Answer Key.
Misconception Alert
Topic vs. Main Idea
Topic (e.g., Tigers) vs. Main Idea (e.g., Tigers are dangerous hunters). Push for full sentences.
Distractor Trap
Picking an answer just because a word from the text is in it. Remind them a detail isn't the whole point.

Honeybees are famous for living in complex hives. Inside these hives, bees build small, six-sided rooms called cells made of wax. These cells are used to store honey and provide a safe place for baby bees to grow. Hives can be found in hollow trees or in boxes built by humans.

Extreme Weather
Tornadoes are violent, rotating columns of air. They usually form during heavy thunderstorms. Tornadoes can have very high wind speeds, sometimes reaching over 200 miles per hour. This force is strong enough to lift cars and damage buildings in their path.

Wildfire Safety
Fire Lookouts: These are tall towers built on top of mountains. Forest rangers stay in these towers to watch for smoke or fire. If they see a fire, they use a radio to call for help. This helps put fires out before they spread too far.

The Amazing Axolotl
The axolotl (ax-uh-lot-ul) is a very unusual creature. Even though it looks like a fish, it is actually an amphibian, like a frog. Most amphibians grow up and move onto land, but the axolotl stays in the water its whole life.
These amazing animals have a special power: they can grow back lost body parts! If an axolotl loses a leg or a tail, it can grow a new one in just a few weeks. Because of this, scientists study them to learn how to help humans heal. Today, axolotls are mostly found in just one lake in Mexico.

The Engineering of Castles
During the Middle Ages, castles were built as strong fortresses to protect kings and nobles. They were engineered with many clever defense systems. Most castles were surrounded by a moat , which was a deep ditch filled with water. This made it very difficult for enemies to reach the walls.
The walls of a castle were also incredibly thick, sometimes reaching over 20 feet wide! On top of these walls, builders created "crenels," which were gaps that allowed soldiers to fire arrows while staying hidden.
