Welcome to Parque Xcaret
Say it: ish-ka-ret
Parque Xcaret is a world-famous nature and history park located along the sunny Caribbean coast of Mexico. You can find it in a tropical region called the Riviera Maya, just south of Cancún. Unlike regular amusement parks that have metal roller coasters and noisy rides, Xcaret is built directly inside a living jungle! Visitors can walk under tall green trees, swim through natural underground rivers, and meet colorful wild animals. Every day, families from all over the globe visit Xcaret to have fun outdoor adventures while learning about Mexico's amazing history, traditions, and wildlife.

The Ancient Maya Port of Polé
Long before tourists visited the park, Xcaret was an important harbor for the ancient Maya people more than one thousand years ago. In those ancient times, the port was called Polé, which means "a place for trading." Maya traders paddled large wooden canoes along the ocean coast to exchange valuable goods like wild honey, sweet cocoa beans, sea salt, jade stones, and shiny bird feathers. Polé was also a sacred stopping place. Maya travelers came here to take ritual cleansing baths in the water before paddling across the sea to the nearby island of Cozumel, where they worshiped Ixchel, the Maya goddess of the moon.

Floating Through Underground Rivers
One of the most exciting things you can do at Xcaret is float down natural underground rivers. The ground in this part of Mexico is made of soft limestone rock. Over thousands of years, rain soaked through the stone and carved out huge underground caves and water tunnels. Visitors put on life jackets and float gently down three peaceful rivers: the Blue River, the Maya River, and the Manatee River. The water is cool, clean, and crystal-clear. As you float along, you see giant rock formations called stalactites hanging from the cave ceiling, and sunny openings called cenotes where green jungle vines hang down toward the water.

Helping Endangered Sea Turtles
CER Evidence Source
Xcaret is not just a park for visitors; it does very important work to save wild animals. One of its biggest programs helps endangered sea turtles. Animal doctors at Xcaret care for sick and injured green turtles and loggerhead turtles in special recovery pools until they are healthy again. During nesting season, park scientists patrol local beaches at night to guard mother turtles and protect their eggs from predators and storms. When the tiny baby turtles hatch from their eggs, park rangers make sure they are safe, strong, and ready before releasing thousands of baby turtles into the ocean waves.
5
Scarlet Macaws and Rainforest Animals
CER Evidence Source
As you walk through the jungle pathways, you can see many species of tropical animals living in protected spaces. Xcaret is world-famous for saving the scarlet macaw, a gorgeous parrot with bright red, yellow, and blue feathers. In the past, these macaws almost completely disappeared from Mexico's forests due to habitat loss and poaching. Xcaret created a record-setting breeding program that hatched hundreds of baby macaws. After raising them carefully, scientists released these birds back into the wild jungles so they could fly free once again! Guests can also see giant butterflies, curious monkeys, and spotted jaguars.

The Living Coral Reef Aquarium
CER Evidence Source
Near Xcaret lies the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. Coral reefs are living underwater gardens where thousands of fish live, but they are easily harmed by warm temperatures and pollution. To protect these reefs, Xcaret built a special aquarium that pumps natural seawater straight from the ocean into its exhibits. Scientists at the park grow living corals inside the tanks to study how to restore damaged wild reefs. Visitors can look closely through clear glass to see colorful angelfish, graceful stingrays, sea anemones, and harmless nurse sharks swimming happily through healthy coral beds.
7
Maya Traditions and the Flying Men
Every day, Xcaret celebrates Mexican art, music, and customs. Guests can walk into a life-sized Maya village to watch craftspeople carve wood, weave bright blankets on wooden looms, and smell sweet copal tree resin used for incense. Nearby, visitors watch an unforgettable performance called the Voladores de Papantla, or the Flying Men. Five brave men climb to the top of a ninety-foot wooden pole. One man sits on top playing a wooden flute and drum, while the other four tie long ropes to their ankles and jump backwards! They spin upside down in wide circles through the open air until they reach the ground.
8
The Great Night Celebration
When the sun sets behind the trees, thousands of people gather in a giant open-air theater for the famous night show: Xcaret México Espectacular. Over three hundred dancers, musicians, and singers take the stage in bright costumes. The show tells the story of Mexico from ancient times to today. Audiences watch athletes play the ancient Maya ball game (pok-ta-pok), hitting a heavy rubber ball with their hips to pass it through a stone ring. As trumpet music fills the night, skilled riders show lasso tricks on dancing horses and mariachi bands play cheerful songs that make the whole crowd smile and clap.
