The Secret in the Blue Jar
Realistic Fiction
Leo loved digging in his backyard garden after school. One warm Monday afternoon, his small hand shovel clinked against something hard near the cedar fence. He brushed away the dark potting soil and dry leaves. A heavy glass jar was buried deep in the dirt. Thick mud coated the sides, but a bright blue sparkle still shone through. Leo ran inside to the kitchen sink. He turned the metal faucet until warm water rushed over the glass. The dirt washed away, revealing a lovely jar that glowed just like the afternoon sky.
Leo dried the jar with a kitchen towel and peered inside. To his surprise, he spotted a tiny rolled slip of white paper tied with a red string. His heart thumped fast with wonder. How had this treasure gotten into his yard? Who put it there?
Leo could not reach the bottom with his fingers because the jar neck was too narrow. He hurried to his desk and grabbed a pair of silver tweezers. Carefully holding the jar upright, he reached in and pulled the tiny paper out without tearing it.
He untied the red thread and gently smoothed the wrinkled paper flat on the table. In faded pencil, the neat handwriting read: “To whoever finds this: Many years ago, a majestic oak tree stood on this very spot. Its green branches gave shade to birds, deer, and children. The tree is gone now, but its memory lives on. Please find a fresh acorn and plant it today!” Leo smiled from ear to ear. Sammy's Big Leap
Animal Fiction
Sammy was a young gray squirrel with a bushy tail and bright brown eyes. He lived with his family high up in a grand pecan tree behind an old red barn. Sammy was great at scurrying up the thick trunk and finding hidden acorns in the soft grass below. However, whenever his older cousins jumped from branch to branch high in the breeze, Sammy stayed behind. Looking down at the green yard far below made his tummy flutter like a nervous moth. The high leafy branches simply felt too dangerous.
One sunny Tuesday morning, Sammy sat with his little sister Pip on a sturdy oak limb. Pip was holding the prize of the day: a smooth, glossy pecan that had fallen into the crook of a branch.
Suddenly, a gust of autumn wind rustled the leaves. Pip gasped as the nut slipped from her paws and tumbled onto a thin branch three feet away across an empty gap. “My pecan!” Pip squeaked, tears welling in her big eyes. “I cannot reach it, Sammy, and it will fall to the ground!”
Sammy looked at the empty gap between the branches. The drop was scary, but he could not stand to see his sister cry. He took two deep breaths to calm his racing heart. Then, he dug his sharp little claws firmly into the rough bark. Sammy bent his legs and pushed off with all his strength. The Midnight Visitor
Mystery Fiction
Mrs. Gable lived in a small white house with a wide wooden porch at the edge of the woods. She shared her cozy home with Barnaby, a round, lazy orange tabby cat. Every Wednesday evening, Mrs. Gable filled a bright blue bowl with fresh, warm milk and set it outside on the bottom porch step. She wanted Barnaby to enjoy an evening snack while listening to crickets. But each morning when she walked outside, the bowl lay tipped on its side and licked completely dry. Strangely, Barnaby was always fast asleep on the soft living room rug.
“Who is drinking your supper, Barnaby?” Mrs. Gable asked with a laugh. The cat just purred and stretched his front paws.
Mrs. Gable decided she was going to solve this mystery. That night, after the sun sank below the pine trees, she bundled up in a warm wool sweater and sat in her rocking chair near the screen door. She held a heavy black flashlight in her lap and waited in the shadows. The silver moon rose high in the starry sky. The house and garden grew completely quiet.
Just past midnight, soft pattering sounds echoed across the wooden porch floorboards. Mrs. Gable held her breath and clicked on the flashlight. A bright yellow beam lit up the steps. Two shiny eyes blinked back at her from behind a bushy black fur mask. A mother raccoon and two fuzzy baby kits were crowded around the blue bowl, taking polite turns sipping the milk! When they saw Mrs. Gable, they froze for a moment. Mrs. Gable smiled kindly and did not move. Tomorrow night, she decided, she would set out three full bowls.

The Clay Whistle
Realistic Fiction
Carlos loved visiting his grandfather's pottery studio on Thursday afternoons. The sunny room smelled like damp earth, and rows of colorful painted bowls lined the wooden shelves. Abuelo was sitting at his big wooden workbench, rolling a moist lump of gray clay between his calloused palms. He moved with smooth, practiced motions, humming a cheerful tune. Carlos had his own lump of clay on a plastic board. He wanted to make a singing bird whistle just like the ones Abuelo sold at the weekend market, but nothing was working.
Carlos pressed the clay too hard, and the bird's head squished flat. When he tried pulling out two pointed wings, the gray clay cracked down the middle. Carlos pressed on a beak, but it snapped off and fell to the floor.
Frustrated, he crossed his arms, slumped in his chair, and let out a heavy sigh. “Mine looks like a muddy potato,” Carlos grumbled. Abuelo stopped humming and smiled with warm eyes. He dipped Carlos's small fingers into a clay bowl of cool water. “Patience, Carlos,” Abuelo said gently. “Clay has its own pace. You cannot rush it.”
“Smooth the rough cracks first,” Abuelo explained as he guided Carlos's hands. “Take a calm breath, and shape the round belly from the inside out.” Carlos nodded and tried again. He used damp thumbs to glide over every rough edge until the bird body was silky smooth. Then, Abuelo carefully carved a narrow air hole near the tail. Together, they placed the whistle in the warm kiln to dry. Later, Carlos blew softly into the hole. A sweet, clear trill echoed through the shop, sounding like a songbird at sunrise. Carlos beamed with genuine pride.
