A Garden That Catches Rain
After a heavy rain, water rushes off roofs, sidewalks, and parking lots. These hard surfaces do not absorb much water. As the water travels, it can carry loose soil and litter toward storm drains. A rain garden can slow some of that water before it reaches a drain.
A rain garden is a shallow dip in the ground filled with plants. A small opening lets runoff enter the garden. The garden is usually placed where water already flows. Its soil allows water to soak in. The roots help hold the soil in place. The plants must be able to handle both wet and dry conditions.
At one school, workers built a rain garden beside a parking lot. They chose a low spot away from the school building. They added plants with deep roots and covered the bare soil with mulch. Mulch helps keep soil from washing away. A stone path gave students a place to stand without stepping on the plants.

A Garden That Catches Rain (continued)
During the first storm, students watched water collect in the garden. By the next afternoon, they could no longer see standing water. After several dry days, the garden looked like an ordinary planted area. The plants stayed in place through both kinds of weather.
The students also found a plastic bag blocking the opening. They removed it so water could enter again. Their teacher added a regular check of the opening to the class jobs. The garden still needed care even though it was designed to collect rainwater.
