Reading Passage Read carefully 2 times
1 Beavers are busy animals. They live near cool rivers, ponds, and streams. A beaver has warm brown fur. It also has strong orange teeth that never stop growing. When danger is close, a beaver slaps its wide, flat tail on the water to warn its family.
2 Beavers are famous for building dams. First, they chew through small tree trunks. Next, they drag heavy branches into the rushing water. They pack thick mud and rocks between the sticks. The dam blocks the flowing stream and makes a quiet, deep pond.
3 In the middle of the deep pond, the beavers build a lodge. From the outside, the lodge looks like a big pile of sticks. Inside, it has a dry, cozy room. The doorway is hidden deep underwater. Hungry wolves and bears cannot swim inside!
Active Reader Mission:
1. Underline the sentence in paragraph 1 that explains what beavers do when danger is close.
2. Circle the two things in paragraph 2 that beavers pack between the sticks.
