2. Slide Blend Units
3. Sentence Accuracy
How We Read Words Today
Focus: Unit Recoding
Old Way: Choppy Tapping
Sounding out letter by letter with hard stops:
/s/ + /t/ + /o/ + /p/
"Too many breaks! The word gets lost."
Squad Way: Unit Recoding
Glue the blend first, then glide into the word:
st
→
op
= STOP
"Glue the blend, glide right through!"
Teacher Cue: "Blend chunk ready? Slide your finger and say the whole word!"
Choral Blend Sliders
Together as a Squad!
s-blend Watch the dot glide
sl • ip → slip
l-blend Watch the dot glide
cl • ap → clap
r-blend Watch the dot glide
fr • og → frog
r-blend Watch the dot glide
tr • ap → trap
Action: Finger under blend → slide smoothly right → read with voice on! No stops!

Lesson 1 Facilitation
Instructional Target: CCVC Blends • Moving from unit-by-unit letter sounding to continuous unit recoding in short decodables (Group size: 8 students).
Warm-Up (3 min)
Oral Blend Snap: Teacher says isolated sounds (/s/ /l/); students clap hands together and snap the unit: "/sl/!" Repeat with /tr/, /cl/, /sp/, /gr/.
Slide Modeling (6 min)
Continuous Slider: Display Slide 2 & 3. Model keeping the vocal tract open from blend into rime (e.g., "sssllliiip", not "s...l...i...p").
Guided Practice (8 min)
Student Sheet: Students write chunk ladders and whisper-read 3 decodable sentences while teacher monitors for zero choppy pausing.
Direct Script: Correcting Choppy /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/ Sounding
When Student Isolates Every Sound:
"Pause right there. You tapped each letter, but our ears lost the word! Let's lock the blend first. Put your finger on st . Say /st/. Now stretch it straight into op : /sttt-op/. What's the word?"
Reinforcing Unit Recoding:
"Notice how your voice stayed on without stopping between the letters? That is called unit recoding . Now read the whole sentence with that smooth glide!"

Digraph Detective Slides Sound Bridge Squad • Lesson 2
Small Group (8 Students)
Target: Consonant Digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ck)
Digraph Detective Shift
Two letters, one sound unit! Spot the digraph chunk, recode the whole word, and conquer short decodable sentences.
1. Spot the Pair
2. Recode As 1 Unit
3. Sentence Fluency
Detective Secret: Blend vs Digraph
Know the Difference!
Consonant Blend
2 letters, but you still hear both sounds:
st → /s/ + /t/ (2 sounds)
"Both voices speak!"
Consonant Digraph
2 letters make ONE brand new sound :
sh → /sh/ (1 single unit!)
"Two letters lock together as ONE unit!"
sh = /sh/ ch = /ch/ th = /th/ wh = /wh/ ck = /k/
Unit Recoding in Action
Say the Unit • Glide the Word
sh
op
recodes to: SHOP
ch
in
recodes to: CHIN
th
at
recodes to: THAT
du
ck
recodes to: DUCK
Rule: Never sound out /s/ and /h/ separately! Say /sh/ in one puff! 1 unit = 1 sound

Lesson 2 Facilitation
Instructional Target: Consonant Digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ck) • Unit recoding without splitting graphemes into separate sounds (Group size: 8 students).
Digraph Lock (3 min)
Two Letters, One Breath: Flash cards for sh, ch, th, wh, ck . Students interlock their index fingers and say: "Two letters, one breath: /sh/!"
Slide Routine (6 min)
Blend vs Digraph: Display Slide 2 & 3. Compare st (two sounds) to sh (one unit). Choral read chunked equations (sh + op = shop ).
Application (8 min)
Mapping & Decodables: Students complete Elkonin sound boxes and read case file sentences. Check for zero /s/-/h/ segmented attempts.
Diagnostic Script: Correcting Split Digraph Errors (/s/.../h/.../i/.../p/)
When Student Sounds Letters Individually:
"Freeze detective eyes! Look at those first two letters: s and h . Do they speak separately here? No! They hold hands to make ONE sound. Lock your fingers: what sound? /sh/. Now recode the word: /sh-ip/!"
Reinforcing Sound-Box Unit Concept:
"Exactly right. That is why both letters squeeze together into just one sound box on your worksheet. When you see them together, treat them as one single chunk!"

How Silent-e Changes the Vowel
Short Vowel → Long Vowel
CVC: Short Vowel
Consonant closes the door (short sound):
cap
/k/ /ă/ /p/ = "cap"
"Short & quick sound!"
CVCe: Long Vowel Glide
Silent-e stays quiet & makes 'a' say its name:
cape
/k/ /ā/ /p/ = "cape"
"Silent-e makes the vowel say its name!"
hop → hope • spin → spine • tub → tube • tap → tape

Magic Wand Switcheroo: Hold magnetic letter tile e . Touch end of word (cap ): students call out long vowel name /ā/ and say "cape!" Repeat with spin/spine .
Slide Modeling (6 min)

Final Check (8 min)
Running Check: Listen to each student whisper-read 2 cumulative sentences on the worksheet. Record accuracy and unit recoding smoothness in grid.
Diagnostic Script: Correcting Silent-e Voicing or Short Vowel Default
When Student Sounds Out the 'e' (/k/.../a/.../p/.../e/):
"Remember: that 'e' is totally silent! Put a finger to your lips: shh! It gives all its energy to jump over 'p' and make 'a' shout its own name: /ā/. Glide it together: /k-ā-p/!"
Reinforcing Cumulative Recoding in Sentences:
"Look ahead before your voice starts. Spot the blend /gl/, spot the silent-e /ide/: glide right through as one smooth word. Beautiful reading!"
